Essex - 1984 and Eighties
« on: August 17, 2015, 08:43:59 AM »
Quite an interesting article in "The Cricketer" this week about Essex in 1984. Good photo of the 1984 team as well.

Puts the success down to Keith Fletcher

Main points:-
1979 - Essex won the Championship for the first time.
1981 - Sunday League won
1983 - Championship won
1984 - Championship won and Sunday League won - First time both cups won.
1985 -  Sunday League won - Gillette Cup won

If only we were that good now!

I certainly agree that Fletch was seen as a great tactician on the field, as well as negotiating run chases off the field. His career after playing isn't so rosy. He was treated poorly but also seemed to not have the same touch with the England or ECCC dressing rooms.

In retrospect, he worked well as a big fish in a small but generally pleasant dressing room. Not sure whether he could handle the big egos like Botham or the suits off the field. It was said that Gooch was better at handling issues such as the dropping of players than Fletch.

That was a different era, with a more level playing field between the bigger and smaller clubs. We shouldn't expect such a welter of trophies nowadays, but to have won so many 1 day matches and not converted into any silverware is poor...
