Awful news this morning from Australia about Phil Hughes in a serious condition after being hit behind the ear by a Sean Abbott bouncer at the SCG. Let's all hope he makes a full recovery. Thoughts are with Phil and his family.

He went down quick - very worrying. Still, the facilities for treatment at the bigger grounds is usually better, also more emphasis upon teaching CPR to players & staff is a really important factor in saving lives: just ask Bernie Thomas and Ewan Chatfield.

To be honest, originally I wasn't in favour of cancelling all the SS matches after the injury. Maybe someone tipped the wink that we were not going to see a Schumacher-like (slow) recovery. Clearly that is past, and it is right to cancel the international on Friday as well.

As Neil says, puts things into perspective - whilst obviously sympathies go out to the Hughes family, for once I really feel for poor David Warner who's understandably very distraught. I never thought I'd say that about someone like Warner, but partisan and personal disagreements are put to one side at this time. 

There will be a number of memorials to Hughesy in the next few months - the best one would be a full and frank investigation into the design of helmets, rather than a knee jerk reaction such as the banning of bouncers. However, it is a time for greiving at the moment rather than blaming.

Ref the helmets, whilst Hughes might have been wearing not the latest model of Masuri helmet I don't think from the pictures that if he had been wearing their latest offering the ball still wouldn't have struck him in the same place?  It's just one of those very rare occasions and tragic accidents.

I am in oz at the mo and it is obviously huge news here. Cricket has great exposure here. I was at the mcg ss game when news came thru of the incident.

On a related matter the fast bowling at the mcg was very agressive with lots of short stuff. The umpires were very lenient on the number of bouncers imo.

My point (genuinely felt, although it may sound trite) was that DW, as a person, is not someone I warm to, especially his comments about Trott and the team during the Ashes but such a tragedy puts these petty concerns into perspective.

I was going mention Abbott as well, who must be beside himself at this point however much people rightly reassure him of his 'innocence', but I felt sorry for Warner, who was in a particularly bad way from the photos at the hospital.

Such a tragedy for someone not quite 26 who had a decent career sadly cut short, RIP & sympathy to his family.Enjoyed watching him top score for Worcs at FCG in 2012, also saw him for Middlesex v us in T20 at Lords in 2009, a sad loss to cricket.
