What was offered to him was considered fair to a player that (despite his undoubted potential) is still at the very early stages of his career and needs to play more first team cricket before wage demands of that scale can be made. it's a sad loss to the team, but that is modern cricket and more and more, we'll see players looking to the game solely as a way to make as much cash as they can over the span of their playing career.
