Browne's Chesterfield milestone
« on: July 11, 2014, 11:56:19 AM »
First of all, my thanks to he or they who set up this site. In the draw at the beautiful Queen's Park Chesterfield Nick Browne scored the highest innings for Essex by an opening batsman carrying his bat. There were no individual career milestones.

You're welcome ,Brian. The only odd thing is that it never occurred to me before that you deserve your own thread.

Thanks

Yes indeed. Do we have to leave our shoes at the door?

Culturally dependent I believe

Can't be bad Brian, having your own individual site - but well merited, Keep up the good work.

Thanks for all your messages. The only time you need to take your shoes off at Chateau Brian is if it's raining or if you have muddy boots. I've done some more research on Nick Browne's feet (sic!) and the only other batsman to carry his bat for undefeated hundreds in the same match is South African Jimmy Cook for Somerset againmst Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1989. Incidentally Cook and his son Stephen are the only father and son to score triple centuries. Nick Browne is the only Essex batsman to carry his bat in a Championship match, however Jack Freeman did the same feat against Oxford University at Chelmsford in 1926.  Peter Bowler carried his bat against Essex at the Queen's Park in 1988. Someone mentioned John Stephenson's two hunderds in a match against Somerset at Taunton in 1992. John did carry his bat in the first innings but Essex declared with two wickets down in the second. Hope all this may help to solve everything but I'm always interested if writers know anything I don't or anything that isn't recorded. The latter does happen.

Don't think that's right Brian. You've already mentioned Stephenson.

I understood him to mean over both innings, with neither being declared.

Thanks Mick and afinetickletoleg. The latter is right, I meant carrying bat in both innings. A finetickle... are you related to Danny Tickle, formerly of Hull and now of Salford?

But surely if the game is drawn with an innings incomplete that can't be construed as "carrying one's bat" any more than if we declared.

Carrying the bat in a completed innings must be the only criterion.

I remember Bob Willis went out to bat NOT carrying his bat.   ;D
