The year it went made a profit

Profit is only measured in monetary terms.

Essex's record at Barren Park was truly abysmal.

Much like the viewing experience.

So only play in a titchy little ground in Chelmsford?

I think so too. But The problem seems to be that unlike, e.g. Southend Council, CDC are unwilling ("can't afford") to help fund our festival. At least that's my understanding of the situation.

Which is ,I think , shortsighted in the extreme considering the amount of trade Colchester Festival brings into the town.
...(hope this is on topic ) By playing the T20 at Colchester even though there was 4500, would have lost at least £30k compared to staging it at Chelmsford with a 6000

Not necessarily. We don't know how much corporate hospitality revenue came in at Colchester. Then factor in the no. of memberships dependent on staging games at Colchester. Might be much closer than you think/want.
Don't forget 550 cars on Saturday at £5 each which you don't get at Chelmsford.

Chelmsford has plenty of corporate as well for T20. You havent included set up costs etc. Considering we only have 1000 memberships anyway it will be very few , who would just get them for just Colchester. By the same token i know many ex members who refused to renew once they got rid of Southend (i am sure there were Ilford members who were the same) and would then join back up if they got rid of Colchester so it swings both ways

You are all fortunate to live in Essex and can get to see a match relatively easily.

I don't live in Essex these days so it's usually an away match (nearest first class ground is 30 miles) or over two hours drive to Chelmsford.

I've seen Essex play at 30+ grounds including Westcliff, Southchurch Park, Ilford, Colchester and Chelmsford - they are all different. Sussex stopped playing at my favourite ground of theirs (The Saffrons) and I don't want Essex to become a mono-ground club.

Your vendetta against Colchester seems to be making the assumption that playing at Colchester means not playing at Southend, and vice versa. That doesn't have to be the case.

Essex used to be a much more popular and successful club when they played at grounds around the county, as well as Chelmsford. They used to win more games then, partly because the out grounds are more likely to produce result wickets. As Mr Bopara observed yesterday: http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2014/content/current/story/760867.html

Amen to that. Best post of the day.

I think in an ideal world would good for Essex to play around the county as they did when it was Ilford/Southend/Colchester, always used to get crowds at all of them, although we were an impressive side back then. Also in those days was endless company tents around the ground which decreased everywhere once businesses needed to cut back , which in turn hit the festivals.  I am sure our membership was around 6000 then, which has dwindled to 1000 now, I am sure the ending of a few festivals has been partly to blame. I know many ex members who used to go to Chelmsford but would have the week off for the Southend week so a membership was worth having back then. Remember days at Southchurch Park where crowds of 7/8000 packed in and they had to close the gates for the Sunday League match.

No just abysmal.

We never won a first class match at Barren Park & that must have been a factor in its binning.

"The Championship is a priority" remember.

Oh yes we did. More than one in fact. You have truly been outed as a rabble rouser. Please go away.

More incorrect facts, but lets not get in the way of an anti-Garons post!

Played 7 Champ games - winning 3 losing 4.

The last game we bowled Leicester out for 34 with Masters getting 8-10

Yes. I remember Southchurch Park, Castle Park, Chalkwell Park, Valentines Park, Leyton and even Harlow being pretty much rammed full for Sunday League games (as well as Chelmsford). Those were the days.

It might seem bizarre to most on here, but I fancy that Hoddy's favourite ground was the much missed (ahem) Garon Park. Such a shame that there was only a couple of dozen there to witness his 5 fer.

Southend Festival done well making a £15k profit that year then with only a couple of dozen people then

Funny how the memory cheats.

All I can remember is dismal backside kickings on what felt like the Siberian steppes.

PS Bless, stickypants has designed an avatar specifically in my honour.

I guess this is what it feels like to be a big time hate figure like Larry.

Don't get too big for your boots - Larry is disliked by all (bar one) on this BB. At the moment I estimate you've only got 87%...  ;)
