. Already slipped up with defeat against Middlesex who then surprisingly beat Hants, still a must win required.

Squad: Disappointing that England didn't release Cox to play. Presumably Thain will come in for Cox.

Harmer, Akhter, Allison, Benkenstein, Bennett, Cook, Critchley, Das, Fernandes, Jones, Pepper, Snater, Thain, Walter

Blimey Harmer will be opening the batting soon.

He might as well.

Essex won the toss and put Hampshire in. Thain in for Cox and Bennett for Akhter.

Walter, Pepper, Allison, Benkenstein, Critchley, Thain, Harmer, Snater, Jones, Cook, Bennett

That was a fabulous performance with the ball. Somewhat unexpected but extremely encouraging.

Good win. Can't see this batting line-up beating Slurry though.

That was a great win and a bit of momentum back after the Middlesex defeat. Fine innings from Paul Walter.  But Surrey are going to be tough to beat, especially at The Oval. Cox should be back for that one though and even if Essex lose, if Durham beat Lancashire, then they can still qualify for the quarter finals (assuming my maths is right).

If Durham win and we lose then Durham will have 24 points, the same as us and their run rate is better than ours.

Great 7 wicket for Essex. excellent bowling to bowl Hampshire out for 130 in less than 20 overs. good all -round display from Matt Crichley. good 50 from Paul Walter. very pleased we chased  the total. :D

Surrey are through, they'll be in second gear. Plus Essex have a decent record at the Oval, we win there a lot more than we lose in T20.

Thanks. So, to no one's great surprise, it turns out my maths was wrong. Beating Surrey at the Oval is the only way through to the quarter finals (apart from some unlikely shenanigans with ties).

A rain off in Manchester would put us through but not sure even Manchester can do rain at the moment.

Excellent win last night with a fine all-round performance from Critchley. Harmer's bowling choices were unusual to say the least - 7 bowlers used in the first 9 overs, and only bringing himself on in the 13th over - but you can't argue with the results. And a good call to halt the chopping and changing to keep Critchley on, once his first over had set the Hampshire innings on the skids. Prior to that they'd looked on course for a much more challenging total.

There's a touch of deja vu about having to win at the Oval to get through - remember Khushi's last ball six a couple of years ago?
