I'd vote Botham. He turned that Ashes series. A couple of years ago I saw some analysis which picked England's best modernish players on the basis of averages. On that basis Tony Greig was the pick.

This thread brings back memories, of a former poster. Who used to start threads asking for comparisons, and as with an exam paper. Used to add the word, discuss.

Wot no Pringle?

But seriously... Botham for me too, although he's a hard player to assess - in the first half of his career he was operating at all-time great level, but then came The Beergut Years, in which he was twice the size but half the player. Still annoys me that he let his fitness go like that and no-one called him out on it. Stokes was top-class for longer, and I'd put him second. Flintoff had one incredible series (admittedly quite an important one) but was otherwise a good player, not a great one. I'm not old enough to have seen D'Oliveira, and just missed seeing Greig play. Obviously none of the others are serious candidates.

It was often said that Tony Greig got more wickets with bad balls than anyone else in Test history. His batting always looked more impressive than his bowling.

Surely Trevor Bailey should be on that list, better than most on there

Mentioning Derek Pringle. How about David Capel, who made Derek Pringle look good.
