Harmer new captain

Westley was vice captain so I'm not sure why Harmer has overtaken him?  I'm not sure why he wont make a decent captain but with Zampa around he really shouldn't be an automatic choice in the team.  He's not that good at T20 and you don't always need two specialist spinners especially on a ground the size of Chelmsford.

Perhaps TW wants to focus on getting back into the England side.  I wonder when RtD's contract is up?  He's pushing 40, although like Fossie very fit for his age, but he can't carry on forever.

A very strange choice ... unless RTD didn't want to do it and there were no other takers. Not a good T20 bowler...perhaps he'll open the batting?!

Is captaincy important in T20?

I've never seen any evidence that it is.

Wow.

Would not even have Harmer in the T20 team when we have Coles, Porter, Amir and Porter. Plus Ravi, Tendo and Delport can bowl.

Presume the club are grooming Harmer to take over from Ten Doeschate full time who is 38 and will be 39 in June.

Yep looks like it if SH lives up to his promise to unwind his SA commitments and become based in the UK.

Sounds like another season of T20 failure is ahead. Shame as I really do like that new shirt.

I thought it was a bit odd when he stood in for RTD at Cambridge last week, which seemed at the time a snub to Chopra who has captained in the past when both TRD and Westley were missing ....however today's news explains it.

Harmer did captain in the last T20 match of last season against Kent and Chopra played then.

This was raised by someone this evening at the forum.  Tom remains vice captain,  but wants to focus on improving his batting.  Ryan wants to bring on the next generation as he is not getting any younger and it was felt that t20 captain was a starting point

Ryan had a calf muscle tear hence why he did not captain.  YlTom was abroad and so could not captain

From memory, I think Harmer had a decent T20 season in SA.  Opened the bowling in a couple of games i think???

Yes. 11 matches - 10 wickets - ave of 21 and economy of 6.92.

Cameron Delport has been rather impressive as well.

Pakistan Super League - 335 runs at ave of 32. He was the 3rd highest run scorer overall. He also got 4 wickets.
South African T20 tournament - 197 runs at ave of 39.

He isn’t in our best T20 team with Zampa back at the club. Unless he’s developed a wrongun he’ll get smashed out the park once again.

As per his captaincy, I just hope he’s attacking with his fielders. T20 is about taking wickets now, especially at Chelmsford.

Re Delport, main thing is that he scores his runs v quickly also
