Kent game
« on: August 01, 2018, 03:35:36 PM »
Ryan ten Doeschate (27) Captain
Adam Wheater (31) Wicket-keeper
Ravi Bopara (25)
Varun Chopra (6)
Matt Coles (1)
Sam Cook (16)
James Foster (7) Wicket-keeper
Simon Harmer (11)
Dan Lawrence (28)
Jamie Porter (44)
Matt Quinn (94)
Peter Siddle (64)
Paul Walter (22)
Adam Zampa (88)

Westley out injured and Zaidi seems to have disappeared.  Is Foster really the next best T20 batsman we have got?  Very bowler heavy team will happen again.  I expect Harmer at 7 and Siddle at 8 if McGraths previous selections are anything to go by with either Foster or Walter in for Westley and Siddle for Wagner.

Must be the weakest line up from us for a T20 match for all time. Westley out and no replacement batsman. Only 5 front line batsmen and that includes wicketkeeper batsman, Wheater, and Lawrence who I do not think has ever made a 50 in this form of the game. With this line up it is not easy to see a win from any of these 3 matches in 4 days. Clearly the Club had written of the T20 Competition before it even started - little regard for all those who have bought tickets in advance.

Whilst agreeing that the batting line up is horrendous, I do at least think that having Foster instead of Westley will actually strengthen the batting and Siddle instead of Wagner will also make the bowling better. Still a very weak T20 team though but stronger than the last match I feel, but still unlikely to win more than 1 of the next three matches (at best!).
I think the club, whilst perhaps not actually writing off the competition before it started, has got very complacent about it, as they know that most of the matches will be all but sold out, despite how rubbish the team actually is!

Soon be back to proper cricket..........

I actually fancy us to spring a surprise. Westley not playing and Siddle is a canny operator in T20.

Chopra
Wheater
Lawrence
ten Doeschate
Bopara
Walter
Harmer
Coles
Siddle
Zampa
Porter

Walter for Westley gives you 7 frontline bowlers plus Lawrence and tendo.  Why do we need so many bowlers in a T20 match?  Harmer at 7 again! Coles has done very little with the bat in 1st or 2nd XI cricket this season.  Surely there's got to be a better way of balancing the side than this?

I hope Walter will be ahead of him!

Can we have no more talk about going on a run, admit we are out, save Cook and Porter for the proper stuff and play seem youngsters.

With Lawrence now injured long term...Foster has to play and keep wicket. A shambles.

A shambles again with Porter once again bowling just the 3 overs!! We looked what we are in T20 this year - a poor unbalanced side, Zampa must wonder what he has signed up to & I will be surprised if we win another game in this group. Just 4 batsmen in double figures which put too much pressure on Ravi & then Coles, at least Walter justified being put at 3 but little consolation. Interesting to see Sun stopping play - that doesn't happen very often. I bet Sky must be really looking forward to our next appearance on TV v Gloucs - Not!!

My - What a big surprise  !!  Never thought that we had much of a chance in this match and we didn't look anything like winning after 10 minutes of the game. Why only five front line batsmen ?  Batsmen win T20 matches not bowlers. Actually comparing us with Kent man for man we are not in the same league as them !!
The "Silverwood effect" has gradually worn off - next Season could be very difficult  !??
So a dead T20 competition with half the games to go. I have tickets for three of them - I certainly wont make that mistake again next Season.

Bopara just "liked" a tweet saying its a joke that he's coming in as low as 5 and 6.  The tweet is 100% correct.  After the first game tendo batted at 4 he said in an interview that it hasn't worked and he'd be going back down the order.  He did for one match and then moved himself back up to 4 again.  Bopara has always batted 4 and tendo 5 or 6.  I can't see the logic in changing it.  Bopara has always been someone who preferred to get himself in and tendo has been a finisher.
The last few games we've seen Finch, Munro and Stoinis all make good contributions against us and yet we felt we didn't need an overseas batsman when it was so obvious to everyone we did.  Everyone that is except McGrath.  A guy that thinks Harmer is a number 7 batsman.  A guy who comes across as an incredibly unimpressive person as well as a poor coach.
