Highlights of old Essex matches
« on: September 04, 2016, 04:35:55 PM »
A friend of mine is a big collector of past Essex matches.  He is not a user on here so I said I would put a message on here for him.  He is looking in particular for footage from this match which was televised in 2010.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/435585.html

If you have this match or matches from 70s/80s or 90s that you could copy or swap as I know he has a very big collection then you can email him direct at  turnerscott77@yahoo.co.uk or PM me on here if you prefer and i'll pass any message on.

Thanks.

There are some matches on youtube - see the link to the Wadham Stringer Indoor 7 a side. I was there and may also have the semi-final matches.

I do have some on old video tapes and have mentioned this to the club a number of times. Apparently Ashley Neave at the club is now looking to build up a collection - perhaps your friend could contact him?

I would need to go through my box of tapes in the loft to find which matches I have ...

Thanks for the reply.  He has the games on the youtube channel.  There probably isn't that many more games available from that era?  The BBC didn't televise that much county cricket did they?  If you did find any matches that aren't on youtube I'm sure he'd be very interested.

Apart from the youtube stuff the only thing I could find online was this site which has a few news clips

My games are mainly JPL e.g. Sussex v Essex [Hastings] plus others such as a newsclip of John Stephenson interviewed when we won the County Championship.

I also videod parts of a County game at Eastbourne but I don't even know if that tape is playable now - it was in the 1980s.

I need to try to preserve these before the video tapes deteriorate beyond copying.

I'd love to see any footage of the Essex v Northants T20 qt/final a few years back as my son was mascot.  I have still photo's but no live coverage not that I expect him to be on it unless the coin toss is shown.

I found a 1981 JPL game v Middlesex on You Tube. I was wracking my brains thinking that I hadn't seen it even though it was on TV and then spotted myself and my mate in the crowd. Sadly the coverage showed that the passing years hadn't been that kind to me. That was the game where McEwan scored a brilliant century and Pringle sliced the winning four in the final over after we started to implode against Edmonds and Emburey. I think we won the league at The Oval the following week with Norbert Phillip's big hitting. I'd love to see some video footage of that!

I was at the Oval to see that game. Remember NP hitting the ball into the top of the pavilion.

Nat - didn't the umpires miscalculate the overs and Surrey had to come out to bowl an extra over after they'd all gone off for tea? I think it was that extra over in which Nobby did a lot of damage?

I was sitting in the pavilion and at least one of Nobby's blows sailed over our heads. I also recall the game ending in really strange light with the setting sun vey low in the sky sending a beam of light across the ground. Halcyon days!

You remember right. I was at the Vauxhall end and that 'extra' over was brilliant to watch. Can remember running on the pitch and watching the trophy presentation from in front of the pavilion. Seemed to happen quite often in those days. No waiting for them to erect a stage covered with sponsor's logos.

Yes I can remember being on the ground at Lord's in 1985 when we won the Natwest by one run. On we went. Much better because it was spontaneous.

One of my happiest memories, not on TV, was when we won the Sunday League at Colchester in 2005. My wife was very ill at the time but my parents looked after my son for the afternoon so I could go to Castle Park. It was really nice to seal the win at a festival ground. My mate took some camcorder footage - I must ask him if he's still got it.

There is 15 minutes of film, courtesy of the 'East Anglian Film Archives' showing takeouts of the Essex v Australians match of 1948 played at Southchurch Park. The website is eafa.org.uk/catalogue/142.

There's some great cricket nostalgia here - including at least two Essex games
