I certainly agree that Fletch was seen as a great tactician on the field, as well as negotiating run chases off the field. His career after playing isn't so rosy. He was treated poorly but also seemed to not have the same touch with the England or ECCC dressing rooms.
In retrospect, he worked well as a big fish in a small but generally pleasant dressing room. Not sure whether he could handle the big egos like Botham or the suits off the field. It was said that Gooch was better at handling issues such as the dropping of players than Fletch.
That was a different era, with a more level playing field between the bigger and smaller clubs. We shouldn't expect such a welter of trophies nowadays, but to have won so many 1 day matches and not converted into any silverware is poor...
