...on here. Given England's magnificent defeat yesterday and the revelation on TMS that jelly fish are edible.
Have some naughty boys been sin binned?
-
Shush... Some of us are trying to sleep.
-
..sorry. Forgot about the hibernation. Just don't end up like the Blue Peter tortoise that mysteriously disappeared over the winter.
-
nothing to report on Essex (and no one is misbehaving which is good).

I hear that ECCC have development plans for a large straw-filled cardboard box to be installed at the County Ground for those who want one. Unfortunately it hasn't quite been built yet.

now, now

Just one little prod... ;)

i thought fred became freda over the winter!

Yes. Blue Peter not just keeping up with the Kardishans, but far ahead of them.
-
Right, let's liven it up....what are the questions that NEED to be asked at the upcoming Members' Forum?
-
First question
What is going to happen with the development of the ground and how will it effect memebers facilities next season?
-
I think the message is that the ground development has been put on hold, and the press release cheerfully (!) announced "business as usual" at the ECG in 2016. My personal view is that things aren't really that bad at the ground, with the exception of the players' facilities, which would be familiar to W.G. Grace! In my opinion, investment is urgently needed in a new coach and a couple of top notch additions to the 1st XI. I think we need an update on how the search for the new coach is going; that is paramount.
-
How far have we got with recruiting these 'three new seamers'??
-
Good post Darren!
-
An interesting photograph of Ronnie Irani, Chris Silverwood and Graham Gooch at the recent renewal of the Amlin sponsorship. Current and future power block?
-
Darren knows that the players facilities (or lack of) seriously impacts our ability to sign top players.
-
Every winter, the panel tells us about the team's objectives for the upcoming season; last year it was winning the T20 Blast. Ronnie has stated that he wants to win a trophy as soon as possible and he is to be commended for this, as it is something we all want. I would ask which trophy (most realistically) and how are the club going about achieving it?

Promotion seems to be a priority with it maybe going to one up one down soon.

Does that mean that our promotion effort will start before June?
-
Personally, I think silverwood is a good shout. He got the lads motivated properly for the 4 games he was in charge, which if I recall we won 3 and drew 1 against the promoted side. He's presided over the development of some decent young seamers( 2 of whom have unfortunately left us) and the players seem to understand him.
The down side is that because he's already here, he won't have much negotiating power with the current set up to get it kicked around and re-organised properly.

mills never developed above his raw talent, under a decent coach would have been so much more.
topley was coached by don.
porter is the only seamer, who has developed at essex and thats it in however many years silverwood has been coaching.
compared with other counties that's pretty poor considering there is literally no other young seamers coming through. in fact its quite shocking. things are so bad a player deemed no where near good enough one season was re-engaged (moore) based on nothing more than lack of alternatives.
player understand him? on what basis have you made that judgement?
the team won games after the season was effectively over. graysons team did that and drawing with a promoted team once they already had promotion is certainly no indicator.
silverwood would be a shocking choice given his influence over the underachievement grayson presided over. he was graysons man and should have gone too. however he is cheap and part of the structure so no chanfe essex will just as likely go with grayson mark 2.

Look outside the club for the next person.

Outrageous, 'revolutionary' talk like that Andy is anathema to ECCC. Personally, I'd like the entire composition of the Cricket Committee, Chairman, et al to consist of "outsiders". As much chance of that happening though as Irani admitting his egotism has the better of him!

Another question I would ask is, with James Foster taking up a position at Forest School, will there be a review of the captaincy role(s) at Essex?

My guess would be No.
I imagine that he only took up the school role after confirming with Ronnie that it would not impact his captaincy.

Ah bless, some people on here still believe in logic and reason when it comes to ECCC decision making.
Personally I doubt it - we used to have a schoolmaster captain the side (older fans may remember Denys Wilcox) but that was in the 1930s before T20 and when no one expected anyone else to win the championship apart from Yorkshire.

That would require someone at ECCC being brave enough to raise the captaincy question with James Foster. And it seems to have been established that such a person does not exist.
-
In the 30s I think Wilcox shared the Captaincy with Tom Pearce & it seemed to work well, Essex had a decent side & regularly finished in the top half. Different scenario these days of course, I reckon if Fossie plays on for more than 2016 his Captaincy would need to be reviewed (some/many would say it should have been reviewed by now anyway!!).

Yes, indeed. Pearce had time off from Tray Grinters wine merchants in the first half of the season, then when term finished Wilcox came in as skipper. However the latter took the first half of the 1939 season whilst TP had already been called up for an important match against 'that little Austrian corporal'. Unwin, Stephenson took over for the end of the season.

Same old, same old then.
Sigh.

Not at all. If you look at the team's performance, the 1930s were a good decade under the shared captaincy. We finished as high as our first season in the cc four decades before, and before the era of immediate registrations, a very rural county like Essex could never over turn the highly populated, and richer, northern/London clubs.
However, the disaster that was the earlier Whizz Morris reign is a portent - numerous times the skipper would phone up on the morning of a match unable to play because of work commitments.
-
There are pictures appearing, in the last day or two, on social media of Irani and Gooch checking out the olympic stadium, is this a sign that we are fast approaching a game there?
-
Playing cricket at the OS is a ridiculous idea.
Full steam ahead then.

Why is ir ridiculous?

Why wouldn't you want to play in front of crowds over 20,000? If the cost of hiring and I don't know how the profits from food and drink sales would work but assume we'd get at least a proportion of it then it really ought to be a no brainer.
-
Last season a member took the time to look up the dimensions of an athletics track, the width is not that great.
Its another super duper six over long on. The batsman was only pushing for a single
-
Well, we get complaints when we stop playing at tiny out grounds, so why the complaint at a serious attempt to get back into the east London market?
-
It's ridiculous because who wants to watch cricket (even T20) with the aid of binoculars.
-
One of the attractions of watching Essex over the years has been that you sit close to the action. Never liked going to watch Essex at test grounds even with a decent crowd although a Lords final with a full house was bearable. One of the many faults with Barren Park was that it never felt like an Essex ground. The Olympic Stadium thing is just another way for our bloated administration to try to justify it's existence. Only way it could make any money for Essex would be having it on even friendlier terms than Sullivan's crew got.
-
Had a good afternoon at the Rugby League test at Stratford today. I guess it would be just about big enough if you could play over the athletics track but not sure how that would work.
-
At the end of the day I suspect it will all be down to £sd.

Did you need binoculars Slogger?
I've been to a couple of events there and not needed them.

Hi all,
I've just found that I can login to the forum again! I've been away from the forum for a couple of months when I foolishly tried to change my password shortly after Eastsax passed away.
Anyway I'm back online and will catch up with all posts since August.
