Title: Tourist Match
Post by: pablo on July 23, 2018, 11:24:08 AM
I am trying to obtain my member tickets for the above game to print off  on line ( should I decide to go) but can't seem to as it just takes me to the general ticketing purchase site ( even though I am logging in as a member) which is trying to charge me £15 or £7 - for Wednesday for some reason- and restricting my access to the Tom Pearce and public areas only. Anybody else having this problem ? Do we have to pay now for this hopelessly overhyped and contrived friendly ? Why do members need a ticket anyway ? Tried to ring the club several times but after waiting or between 10 and 15 minutes gave up.

When I obtained some last week, there were no members available for the Wednesday, just public - but the charge was still £0.

The net result of members having to get free tickets is that any member who thinks the might perhaps, maybe, go one day will get tickets for all days to leave options open.

Thanks Mick. It's still a ridiculous system. Why not just let members in on production of their membership as was always the case until recently. As it stands they have issued a number of tickets to members who may never use them. These games have been a bit of a waste of time in recent years anyway. The only reason I am vaguely contemplating going on perhaps one day ( although I have now managed to acquire tickets for all 4 days) is the post World Cup, Open Golf and Wimbledon malaise !

We used to get a 'token' in the membership book before the plastic credit card style membership passes.

Post by: bwildered on July 23, 2018, 07:17:27 PM
The clubs reasoning was knowing how many members were going to attend ( ! ) although weather and Tourist teams strength is more to members attending with full set of tickets .
However the previous time I attended , such matches had reserved seating at extra cost to non members in members seating areas - nice extra earner .

Post by: Postman on July 23, 2018, 08:29:05 PM
Is it correct, as I heard today from several people who are usually well informed, that this match will not be first class, ie 13 or 14 a side squads or whatever?
People who have paid for admission might be a bit peeved about this though I accept it may be beyond the club's control.

And why is the website not working properly this evening? The link from the tourist match advert page doesn't work.
Title: Re: Tourist Match
Post by: pablo on July 24, 2018, 12:07:45 PM
If this is correct it's almost taking a liberty to charge anything for what effectively will be a glorified net. It wasn't that long ago that these games were taken seriously with some sponsors putting up some attractive prize money for the winning side. Would be England players wanted to play to demonstrate their potential and the opposition wanted their players to vie for a test place. These games are now a waste of time and effort for any serious spectator. I am old enough to remember Australia playing a full strength Essex side at Ilford in 1972 and Boyce hooking Lillee for six into the Cranbrook Road. No quarter was asked and none given but boy was it worth watching. Today like a lot else in cricket at the moment these games have become devalued and trivialised.
Title: Re: Tourist Match
Post by: nat on July 24, 2018, 12:29:40 PM
Pablo - agreed. Just look at the number of CC games finishing in 2-3 days in glorious weather and on supposedly better pitches. Notts are subsiding vs Surrey because they can't be asked. Players only interested in the fast buck of T20.

Title: Re: Tourist Match
Post by: terryb on July 24, 2018, 02:21:24 PM
The game has been reduced to a three day match with unlimited players used due to 'high temperatures'. I assume that in future all Test Matches and IPL games in India will be cancelled if the temperature is above 34 degrees. If not, why not?
I have decided not to use my tickets to watch a three day net. I also assume that when wwe next visit India for a Test Series, the Indian Board will allow the England team a similar practice net against the Ranji Champions at the start of the tour.
Several fellow supporters have told me they won't be attending either.

It would be nice to think that the ECB, on behalf of one its member clubs, protested against this nonsense and asked the Indians to stump up to allow Essex to refund admission money for all days, but I expect they actually said "Are you sure you don't want to play only 2 days?", or even "why not use this as a chance to trial our new 100 ball format using five bowlers per over and a beach ball"?

Reading the article suggested by JasonP, it appears that India are afraid that their players might get injured whilst fielding on our parched outfield. How is it that they will be OK for the first three days but it will become dangerous on Day 4. I assume that they have made travel arrangements for Saturday. Why were we not told before. There is only a ticket refund path on the Essex CCC web site. No reimbursement for travel and hotels alreadty booked.

I'm sorry as I said before this is a farce. If we don't get another tourist game why should anybody worry as it would not be a game/match in any meaningful sense of the word. The West indies game last year was a complete damp squib and the Australian one the year (sic) before not much better. All the pretence and palaver that this is a special event where members have to get a special ticket to get a specific seat... do me a favour and spare me this nonsense from now on.

The Essex v England game ended up as non first class following injuries, Boyd Rankin bowled for us, Tom Westley broke/fractured his finger/thumb, poor Tom Craddock had his 5 for deemed non first class (his only one for Essex) & by Days 3 & 4 many had lost interest anyway, crowds went down daily & the final day attendance was less than we often get for CC matches.
Personally though I will attend each day I wouldn't blame anyone who doesn't bother as neither side will take it seriously & assuming India bat first i can't see them declaring to set us a gettable target on Day 3. BTW the Australia game in 2015 wasn't that bad, it was entertaining with plenty of runs , great weather & very good crowds.

It's hotter in Chelmsford! I went to races at Gt Leighs last night and my car told me it was 26 celsius at 9.30 when I came out. I have a ticket for Friday but the downgrading of this game and the heat have persuaded me to visit friends in Norfolk on Friday. I'd be interested to hear what the crowd is like for this game.I'm sure the club will have done well on corporate hospitality and I imagine there will be a lot of Indian fans about but I wonder if a lot of members will give it a swerve now?

I do not see a problem with India playing 18. When on tour England always played 22 of New South Wales or even 22 of Australia. So why not 13 of Essex vs 18 of Inda. The weaker side was always allowed more players. All I would say is it should be 11 of Essex.

I see there is a Q&A tomorrow session tomorrow. Someone might like to ask about this:

"To all Members of Essex County Cricket Club,

I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date with the current status on the Ground Development at Chelmsford.

As you know we successfully completed the first phase of the Ground Development with MCD following the construction and sale of the Century House in 2015. Since then, despite giving MCD two extensions of time, MCD have been unable to provide us with a proposal for the development of the rest of the ground that was in line with the arrangements the Committee had previously agreed with them. Accordingly, 30 months after the completion of Century House, the agreement with MCD has come to an end and we have decided not to give MCD any further extensions of time.

In the meantime, we are looking at other opportunities to improve our facilities and will keep you updated as and when the Committee has something to report.

Your understanding and support is very much appreciated.

Regards,

John Faragher
Chairman
Essex County Cricket Club"

So how much money did we get out of this deal?

Both him and Quinn bowled well today and in the CC game against Notts they played and both could do well in the CC matches but how do they get into the side?  Porter, Cook, Siddle and Harmer plus Ravi is the prefered bowling line up.  As yet we havent got an overseas bowler for the last 3 CC matches so if we don't there's a space there, I guess.

Although the batting at times was very entertaining with Kohli showing his class against admittedly poor bowing by Dixon I am afraid to say that there is a complete & utter lack of urgency by both sides with numerous breaks & we finished on time but short on overs!
Coles & Quinn bowled very well but Dixon was erratic & Walter who got 2 wickets with decent deliveries(both slanted across the batsmen) bowled most deliveries on or outside leg stump & was very expensive, Great to see Nijjar given a bowl even though it took some 60 overs before spin was introduced, he bowled very well with thought & intelligence, Essex could do a lot worse than persist with him, he is worth it. Despite the weather & it being School hols the crowd was disappointing ,less than half full, but you can't blame people with the match reduced to non first class & 3 days plus Essex fielding a weakened team, sadly the importance of these games has declined sharply. One more thing the body language of Essex players especially Walter left much to be desired.

We barely have a couple of decent batsman at the moment.  Chopra, Westley, Lawrence have all been useless this season and tendo has 1 score over 50.  No way we can afford to have Harmer at 7 with the way we've been batting this season.  We tried that against Notts and it was a disaster.

I remember Ravi saying over the PA at the toss a couple of years back "conditions look perfect for batting, we'll have a bowl".

I am unimpressed with the way Essex hyped this match up and then decided those who were turning up did not deserve to see our four front line bowlers, our captain, our wicket keeper, the leading English Test run scorer and Ravi Bopara.  School holidays just starting, there may have been a few fans coming along who could have been won over by a competitive meaningful match.

To be fair it's the same wherever the tourists play.

The tourists always bat first. I recall checking it out and it was something like 90 per cent of the time.

Cook was never going to play.. he's not played in the tourists games before.

I think the  club has need to update the website.  It still has the match lasting to Saturday

Some fair comments, obviously Ally was never going to play & didn't expect him to but still feel a bit cheated & Day 3 will probably finish early as India won't be interested in making a game of it & will just be interested in batting practice assuming we don't collapse twice in one day - always possible.
One other thing - Hayes Close advertised as Blocks 27-31 for Members but only 30 & 31 available due to positioning of wicket, maybe this could have been advised on website as seating options at that end greatly reduced.

I heard Don Topley suggest yesterday that Cook may have played if it had been a proper match. It seems doubtful to me but maybe he knows something we don't?

I suppose countries don't "tour" anymore. What with different teams for different formats international teams fly in, play a practice match, which isn't really a match at all, and then play an intensive series. Probably explains why there's so much home advantage in test cricket these days.

I am unimpressed with the way Essex hyped this match up and then decided those who were turning up did not deserve to see our four front line bowlers, our captain, our wicket keeper, the leading English Test run scorer and Ravi Bopara.

They did get to see Kohli.

He was the only reason I was there.

It was also nice to see Fozzy behind the wicket for a change.

I see that Snater bowled a few overs. He was not in the original published squad. I feel that the Club could have made some money by auctioning the opportunity for a member of the public to bowl an over. An avid Indian supporter would have paid a fortune to bowl an over at Kohli.

Best idea I've heard in ages.

The winner gets to bowl at a Test batsman,
2nd prize - a month's free coaching from Nat,
3rd prize - six months free coaching from Nat,
10th prize - adoption by Nat.

68 from the new “wonderkid” on the block. Anyone there (Nat) report on how he did and whether he’s a first teamer in waiting or another dud who got lucky?

Pepper batted with great assurance & showed a wide range of strokes striking 15 4s with style & timing, definitely one for the future & if we are safe come Sept worth giving him a game or two, Patel also looked ok in his shorter innings.
Very good to see Westley get some much needed runs, also Fossie showed he hasn't lost any of his ability, earlier 2 great catches by Dixon & Kushki as well. Very disappointed in the Indians slow over rate with just 74 bowled all day-equivalent of an hours worth short but clearly India can do what they like & have everything done to suit themselves!! It would have been nice to see spin given a chance today given that India are usually so strong in that area, a decent effort from Essex today though, crowd about the same as yesterday but I suspect far less will bother tomorrow given the forecast temperature etc - I bet the match doesn't go beyond tea!

Tom Craddock has a Michelle for Essex despite forfeiting the one he took against England. It is 5-96 against Derbyshire at Chelmsford in 2012.

Sorry for the delay in 'biting'. I have been busy giving Virat Kohli a four hour net to iron out some faults I had identified.

Prizes are a touch generous. I wouldn't need anything like a month/6 months to turn a novice player into international class.

Unfortunately 10th prize will be unavailable due to a pending court case.

Seems Coles put in a shift today?  Should've sweated off a few pounds.

he's looking pretty fit at the mo. would like to see him given a run in the CC games. Then we'll find out if he's up to the job.

Well Coles is a better bet than Quinn...at the moment. An attack of Porter, Siddle, Cook and Coles would be pretty handy. Add Harmer and Foster plus 5 decent batsmen...job done.

We barely have a couple of decent batsman at the moment.  Chopra, Westley, Lawrence have all been useless this season and tendo has 1 score over 50.  No way we can afford to have Harmer at 7 with the way we've been batting this season.  We tried that against Notts and it was a disaster.

who said anything about Harmer batting at no.7? Still bats at no. 9 cos Siddle and Coles are better bats.

Coles and Siddle both have career first class batting averages of under 20.  Nowhere near good enough to bat at 7.  Harmer averages 25 and he's nowhere good enough to bat there either.  Particularly the way the top 6 are batting.

Well that was a worthwhile event, not. Glad I gave it a miss. How long to the next proper cricket?

Good job the club didn't mention Kohli's batting average in England.

Clearly some tongue in cheek humour.

Of course for every idiot who gets ‘offended’ by a comment there are many more who didn’t get offended. But they don’t make for cheap news. Indeed, those who got offended are looking for some notoriety...

Some of these Indian fans are so touchy about their beloved heroes who apparently can do no wrong. I wonder how they would react if England on tour in India requested a warm up game be reduced in days. I think it was an insult to Essex the way it was done here given that we are the current County Champions to boot, pity the ECB don't have the balls to tell India where to stick their request, but we all know India can do exactly what they want in all aspects of cricket.

Typical sense of humour failure from the snowflake generation is not limited to this country it would seem.

Well the tweet was typical English understatement. Anyone who understands the nuances of English and the way the English communicate would get it. It was actually praising the bloke. Strewth

I gave Murali Vijay a bit of a send off from the crowd and a few of them got really upset.
maybe it's because we'd been imitating them squealing like schoolgirls for an hour.....
worst fans in world cricket.  no sense of humour at all, and certainly nothing to back themselves up with when we stood up and went and had a chat...
all in a very friendly way.
Kohli scratches his a### and they go into meltdown.   ;)

Anyway, I had a lovely 3 days off, watched loads of cricket, imbibed far too much, and generally had a great time.
I hope they enjoyed the small changing room and heaters being put on in their toilets.
