Essex v International Cavaliers 1965

Noticed this on youtube yesterday.  Played at Hoffman's Sports Ground, Chelmsford.  A bit before my time but thought someone might find it interesting.

Blimey the grainy footage makes it look like 1865. Interesting though. I'll make my way through the 60 minutes in due course.

Fascinating. Could do with a Peter Jackson style renovation of the film. I was confused by the Essex keeper being a Taylor but not Tonker!

These games were run by Harvey Bagenal, who was mainly a theatrical agent. He had the dirty done on him, when another Tobacco company started the Sunday League in 1969.

I've watched a few of these on You Tube over the winter.Glimpses of a young Keith Boyce in a couple of them and Keith Fletcher, playing for the Cavaliers. It really is a bygone age. Did anyone on here ever attend these games? I guess they were not taken too seriously?

I may well have attended, but really can't remember - after all, it was 60 years ago, I was 18 then and am 78 now!

The BBC have shown film of a Somerset v The Cavaliers game.

In it, a Somerset player should have been run out, but nothing was done. So that the crowd can still be entertained. John Arlott is commentating and as sixes are hit in his direction by the Cavaliers. He used the Royal Navy term, being bracketed. That the range is being found, for a direct hit.

At the end, Frank Bough and a sponsor are presenting the Man of the Match cheque, which is in Guineas.

Trevor Bailey, told a story about a well-supported game. When instructions from Lords, was not to give the figure as to the size of the crowd. This was the time, when there was quite a bit of opposition to sport on a Sunday.

Ahh good days. Happy days. Shops shut on a Sunday. No professional cricket on a Sunday. Rest day on a Sunday for Test matches. Then JPL on a Sunday from 2pm - 6:40pm. Still good/happy. 3-day CC games starting on a Saturday with a break for JPL and then restarting on Monday. Barmy but it worked. Pre-match nets on the square. Spectators allowed to mingle with the players while they practiced in the nets or on the outfield. Geoff Boycott got some spectators to bowl at him before one match at Chelmsford. I'm sure some of the players must have hated it but it worked. 7 days a week county cricket. Yes sometimes it could be considered a circus but it sort of worked. Superstars in every county team. Where are the superstars now?

Typical, always somebody standing in the way of the overs total on the scoreboard. That Boyce guy looks to headstrong with the bat, won?t  sign him has an overseas player, need another spinner has we only had five ! Had Compton lost his brylcream contract, has he kept wiping the hair from his brow.
That Sunday afternoon stuff rubbish, more exciting turning up a somebody?s home unannounced for Sunday tea .
