It is a golden rule of one day cricket, that you try to bat out the overs. Not finish twelve overs short.

Well the clock on the wall says we have a little time to fill, about two hours in fact.

The South Africans finished more than twelve overs short.

The idea is, not to leave the South Africans, overs short. So that, if it was on the BBC. They would have to put on episodes of Animal Park, Bargain Hunt and Escape to the Country.

We seem to have invented a new format ?The 38?. A revamp of the old John Player Special competition.

The old Sunday League had 38 and 39 over games, if the overs were not bowled by 4.20. Or in the case of Essex at the Oval a 40 over game became a 39 over game and back to 40 overs again, due to a late start. Nobby Philips then hit the extra over all round the ground.

That helped in winning the league.

Yes, it was 1981 and there was a discussion between the Umpires, and Essex Fans on the Pavilion steps.

The Umpires would have said, by the time I learn the playing regulations, they change them again.

Yes 1981. A brilliant day. So many near misses in that competition. The Sunday League and the way Essex approached it probably saved the club.

Going back to England I should think quite a few of that squad shouldn't be picked again in 50 over games. Too many T20 specialists who can't vary their games, in my opinion. No credible second spinner and a bevy of tall fast bowlers with dodgy fitness records.

I would move on from Salt (woeful yesterday), Overton, Carse, Wood (ludicrous to ask him to bowl when clearly injured) to name but four. Buttler must be on borrowed time (not much of a keeper and not delivering much with the bat).

Losing with plenty of overs to spare did not just happen in the last fixture, but several games in India.
The handbrake off approach to play to full potential works if players are in form, but is so easy to let others take responsibility if they fail.
Selectors had no consistency picking players, so some take the career path of franchise over country.
