Benkenstein's 27 wickets in 4 games in the seconds is not too shabby, despite questions about the quality of some of the opposition (and their ability to play leg spin). Who was the last Essex bowler to do that?

But if there was a higher standard somewhere between the seconds and the first team then that would be better preparation.

Gary Sainsbury took 28 wickets in 3 second eleven  games in 1982.
A left arm seamer,  he moved on to Gloucester.

Thanks. I vaguely remember him. Not much chance for another left arm seamer with John Lever in the side. And going by cricinfo he went on to have a decent career for Gloucs.

Sainsbury made his debut in 1979 after the championship was won and I think he also played in the match at Lord's v MCC in early 1980. He did ok at Gloucester, who capped him as he retired.

If my memory after 45 years is accurate, Sainsbury's debut waa against Northants. He beat the bat a fair bit with no luck, especially against a left hander (Jim Watts?)

It waan't too usual in those days for a player to leave Essex and go somewhere else.

My memory is similar. A lot of members were unhappy about him leaving

Sainsbury did indeed open the bowling a Lords Vs MCC. He had JKL at the other end. Is this the only occasion Essex opened with to left are over seamers?

I'm sure it's not that rare,  for example in 2001 when Essex played Australia  in their second innings Mark Ilott and Justin Bishop opened the bowling and both we left armers.

No idea how I remembered this but it happened in the second innings here.

Reece Topley and Tymal Mills have played together a few times and they all played in 2011 as well as the legendary Lonwabo Lopsy Tsotsobe. So 2 out of 3 of them could have opened at one point. David Masters was part of the team then so he would have opened if he was playing.

Was it?  Steve Malone is another around that time who had to move to get better first team chances but can?t think of many others.

Plenty of players in the seconds who moved on (usually out of the game) but it was later on, when the club wasn?t doing so well, that it seemed to dispense of young players who went off to have reasonable careers elsewhere. It was also the time that KC Newton discussed in her report. Cause and effect?

Now we have muppets who are established players leaving to go to further their international careers, plus Ravi who moved to avoid winning trophies.

Agreed Andy, it wasn't too usual then. My dad briefly worked with Malone who, I think played for Glamorgan and Hants? I can't recall anyone else leaving until people like Chris Gladwin around 1987?

Plenty who played first team cricket and moved on to other counties. For example, Chopra, Shahid, Goldleman, Jefferson, Anderson, Middlbrook, Adam Seymour, John Stephenson, Wheater, Chris Wright etc.
Matt Fosh left Essex to become a millionaire!

Nick Knight, JJ Lewis, Steven Peters and Pallandino are others who had decent careers elsewhere.
