Great win. Well done. Zaidi the man!

He's been a revelation this year in one day cricket.  He only signed a one year deal so I hope that we get him signed up for next year pretty soon.  The way he's playing other counties are going to to be interested.

Wonderful, clean and positive hitting by ZAIDI. A great watch, improvised when needed as well but really every stroke he played was positive. Ryder and the rest could learn a lot from that innings.
A great way to end the match with a 6 of Finn. And thank goodness for helmets after that hit on RTD. I thought joyce was a bit biased in his commentary.
................. :) :D ;D

Terrific innings from Zaidi, superb controlled hitting, Lawrence also batted well (bar his part in the run out), bowlers did an excellent job & fielding generally very good.
Win tomorrow night & we could sneak 3rd, at present it would be Notts (4th) or Northants/Yorks (3rd), great result for the Eagles, roll on Friday.

He's generally put in a good shift right from his first match. Not trusted with the ball, perhaps unfairly, but certainly has shown some nous in at the death with the bat. One of the few signings in the past couple of decades to really show up. I wonder if he'd want to play the grind of the cc at his age?

When the Eagles beat Hampshire a few weeks back at the Ageas Bowl, I was critical of the role Zaidi played, likening his innings to a floundering flailing mismatch of a lower order batsman promoted to pinch hit above his capability.

Well how happy am I that tonight Zaidi rose to the bait of a potential quarter final and catapulted the Eagles to yet another remarkable and at times most unlikely win.  Cometh the hour and cometh the man. What a knock and what superb shot selection, thoroughly out thinking the bowlers. Well played indeed. Middlesex looked really shocked and but for Zaidi, would probably have won, although with Tendo, Foster and Napier, still to bat, who knows what would have happened.

Lawrence played an important innings, showing maturity above his age, and impressed with his calmness, apart from the unfortunate run out of Ravi, which was more attributable to Ravi than him. He did not let it affect him though and hit a valuable boundary within two balls I think of Ravi's dismissal.

Given that the pitch was dry, tired and slowing up the longer the game went, and the control that the spinners exerted, I was very surprised that Zaidi did not bowl at all. This was picked up on Sky, and as Zaidi possibly was recruited more for his spinning prowess than his batting ability, was this not a surprise, and if we had lost, the question of his non bowling might have provoked A debate.

Whatever the pros and cons, The coach trip back to Chelmsford will have been sweet indeed.

If we beat Glamorgan tomorrow, still a big ask, we will have qualified, but even if we lose and provided that we are not thrashed, our run rate or whatever it is called is much better than Surrey and marginally better than Kent, who play each other tomorrow. All to play for. Chelmsford tomorrow night should be heaving. I wish I was there, but will be watching, bottom of the table clash between Hampshire and Somerset. Who'd have thought that, a few seasons ago!!

My heart however will be elsewhere, willing the lads on for one final push.

Tonight has demonstrated for me why cricket, with its ebbs and flows is the greatest game in the world.

Paint in black ... Perhaps the top order will change the colour of their willows also ! A masterclass of hitting by Zaidi on a stogy Lords wicket .
Invaluable innings by Lawrence after early wickets, in keeping the scoreboard ticking over, ( would like to see him next see the job home ).
Any win is a good win though .

i say Ryder because i am sure that his 20/20 is not as good as his 50/50,  (obvious to most)
But back to the man point, that was one of the best innings i have seen from an Essex player in recent times.  (Bopara has played like that for England )
There were  in excess of 20 000 at Lords, the home of cricket and in front of  Sky, with the tv monitors.
And yet, he looked so cool out there
Others (on both sides) had failed and batting was difficult for them.
Positive from the word go
Ryder is a wonderful hitter of the ball and can play like Zaidi, but on numerous occasions has done in the 20/20 exactly what he did last night , i.e. just hit up into the sky in front of him.
Zaidi played with purpose, a great innings and did it when IT WAS NEEDED. Without him, i fear Essex would have lost. Perhaps should have bowled, as well.
PS young Lawrence played in a very positive manner, as well. Interesting to note that Bopara got run out, as he often  runs other's  out.

I also think that Middlesex possibly missed a trick in only giving Franklin one over (he got 1/3)
Also, they were missing 3 vital players, Morgan, Stirling and Fuller.

So why do we need big city franchises? No super duper stars on top money, a televised game, yet loads of people turn up. You'd get a similar crowd for a reverse fixture at Stratford.
