Picked up 174, admittedly against Fiji but still a big one.

Yes, it is the second highest in the history of the U19's cup.

If he he is the next player to play for England from Essex, he will be a bit more exciting to watch than Cook, methinks.  Nothing against Cook, he is superb at what he does, but he is a bit limited in stroke play, whereas  Dan can also play the short game to a high standard. I know it is early days for him, but it seems to me that he is destined for high honours. I guess Messrs. Browne and Westley harbour ambitions to also play for the country. Looking at the money that they earn now playing for England, it must be the dream. of every county cricketer.

It's always the case that the younger County players seem to mature reasonably quickly to a point where they are ahead of their opposite numbers from other countries. However, for the latter, they seem to manage a steeper learning curve when transitioning to international level.

Central contracts perhaps do work to pull younger players out of their county comfort zones - but are we just seeing a problem with too little quality 4-5 day cricket experience?

It's not forget Doropoulos -179 all time record and Pagon 176 World Cup record who both went on to better things ?

The modern batsmen can play 80-85mph bowlers all day long. Their problem is playing against even moderate spinners. Take a look at how England played against the Saffer off spinner. Made him look good.

I include the likes of David Masters in this comment. You might almost consider him a spinner when you see what he can do with a ball. The result is that he has had more success in the last 7-8 years than much faster but less skillful bowlers.

So the upshot is that world cricket needs to encourage all types of bowlers not just 85mph+ pie chuckers. How do they do that ...?

Limit bat technology
maximise ground boundary distances
strictly enforce over rates
only one new ball per innings in CC cricket and 1 day cricket
Reduce the number of points for a draw in CC cricket

Job done.

Well I'd rather watch a limited Cook get a 100+ than a flashy player (KP ??) get himself out after 50 - much better for the team.

Anyway, how can you call someone with very nearly 10,000 test runs limited?

i think you are making mischief, if i used the word 'limited' and it offends you in the case of talking about Cook's ability, then so be it.  Maybe i used the wrong word, i was attempting to say and may would have got mr drift, that it is well known  fact that Cook has set range of stokes where he gets his runs and is usually great  at knowing when to leave the ball. Of course , when he is in the groove, he is arun machine.  You may be from the old school who greatly admires his attributes and character and stubbornness , but i have to say, in all essence,  that he does not put 'bums' on seats. I acknowledge that the real connoisseur  of cricket will love the way Cook plays his cricket. On the hand, the more exciting stroke play of Warner, Root , KP, Stokes and say Hales (if he were to stay longer at the crease) appeals to the masses.
