I had am e-mail, from someone purporting to be from the club which says.....

"your 2016 Membership renewal pack will be on its way to you around Monday 9 November.  As you have previously opted to pay by Direct Debit the letter accompanying your pack will advise that you do not need to take any action.

However we have now been informed by our Bank that the payment details we have on record for you are incorrect either due to a change in account or a processing error.  With that in mind please complete the attached Direct  Debit Instruction form and send this in to us along with the renewal form enclosed in your renewal pack at The Membership & Ticketing Office, The Essex County Ground, New Writtle Street, Chelmsford, CM2 0PG".

Firstly I have the same bank account for decades which rules out the first excuse, and secondly what the hell are their bank doing looking at my details in November when the direct debit doesn't get taken till January!

My first thoughts were that this is some kind of scam and didn't open the attachment, but more than likely it's just another Essex cock-up.

Is there anyone competent at Essex CCC anymore?

I'd suggest No Change Essex have probably been 'scamming' their members for rather a long time!
It may be that the Club are expecting rather more members than usual to resign their membership - something that has diminished in real term value for, again, rather a long time. For example; Removal of any members parking at the ground. Charge for Meteor Way parking. Removal of two festivals out of three in 13 seasons. Continuing employment/ contract extension of players who chose when and where they will play for ECCC. Inability to trust anyone who is an outsider. Failure to be honest with their members. Unwillingness to move towards real and democratic change. Members "consultation" over the alleged "ground redevelopment". I never saw any feedback on that fiasco - and another year on no plans/drawings....however vague, being released. For that matter, not a foundation has been excavated for the spectator aspect of the 'project'.

TO be fair, when I had a business a few years ago we used to collect fees using Direct Debit.
If there is a dd in place, we would get notifed via a computer system if the account changed, the dd was cancelled and so on. I can't comment on why this has happened in your case, but we were often sent "fasle  alarms" and so on. The problem is that having received an "exception report" the only option is to contact the person concerned as the bank would say "none of your business".

So it is probably someone at the club being efficient

I can only say that having had a multitude of direct debits for decades this is the first time I have come across this.

Even if ECCC are not at fault it is their problem and their customer service is well down to their usual standard.

Why not just post me a new DD form with a prepaid return envelope?

Toner, paper, envelopes and a postage stamps don't come cheap you know.

Apparently one of the reasons that the ground redevelopment is on hold is that they can't work out how to fit all the non-cricket managers and admin staff that they employ into the new pavilion. As one who can remember the pre-computer days with 8000 members and corporate hospitality sold out virtually every day of the season with far fewer staff I have to wonder what the back office hordes at the ECG actually do.

I fondly recall those halcyon days too. The difference?.....On the administration leadership in those days were P. Edwards and M. Field.

As part of the Direct Debit renewal process we were alerted by our bank of approximately 30 accounts (out of the circa 1500 Members that pay by Direct Debit) that for some reason were flagged with an error.

The report generated and sent on to us had no other details about why these accounts had been flagged - only that those listed would likely result in a rejected payment.

The Club, therefore, took the decision to contact those affected in advance rather than waiting for the rejections in January.

Looks like the membership cost has gone up by £10?! Perhaps the club ought to have contacted members about the increase before sending out the renewal e-mail.

By a strange coincidence (or not), when the club sent out it's e-mail to members recently about the stalling of the redevelopment project, I wasn't included. When I queried why they hadn't sent it to me, they told me that they had sent it to the e-mail address that they had for me on their records. That e-mail address didn't exist and had never existed and didn't even look like a valid address. (They still didn't send me the e-mail though!).It wasn't till then that I realised that I hadn't received any over and out e-mails for a while. May also explain why having handed in my ticket for the rained off T20 game with a request for the refund to be kept on account for next season, they sent me a cheque for £8 instead.  Checked my bank account on-line and the Direct Debit details for ECCC are still there, so it appears that someone somewhere (not me or my bank) made a "processing error" with my DD details and my e-mail address. Hopefully they've still got my address right or I won't get the mailing this week!
