Clive Rice

Sad news about Clive Rice. Quite a rival when captain of Notts but I always thought he was magnanimous in defeat, especially after the 1985 Nat West final. When it was put to him that Brian Hardie had rode his luck in making his century he replied "You make your own luck in this game".

Agreed, he was an excellent batsman, fine fast bowler until injury put a stop to that & a good Captain who should have played more Test cricket (not his fault but down to the SA Test ban). He will be sadly missed & mourned, RIP.

Looking back at his stats I'm surprised he averaged 40 with the bat and 22 with the ball. Strangely enough, I was shocked at the time when he won that all rounder challenge. I suppose it was because of the presence of Haddlee/Botham/Khan at the time who were playing Test Cricket, meant he got overlooked (like the Kenny Macs and Jimmy Cooks were as specialist batters).

He seemed to be pulling the strings as Notts skipper rather than leading from the front, a bit like Fletch for us, always contributing when the likes of Robinson or Haddlee failed.

Ultimately, reflecting back, he seems of a completely different era when cricketers seemed like hard men rather than dopey posh kids who find it all 'rather brutal', and when overseas players would show great loyalty to their adopted counties.

A fine all rounder and adversary of Essex, who  formed a formidable partnership with Sir Richard iHadlee in County Cricket with Notts .
