BBC Essex commentary yesterday (23 June)
« on: June 24, 2015, 11:18:37 AM »
Was anyone else listening online at about 3:45 when instead of the cricket commentary they broadcast a 15 minute personal phone call between one of the commentators and, it seems, a BBC TV news presenter?

I had to go out at 4, so I don't know how long it continued or when said commentator twigged that he was live on air, but it was an almighty cock up.

Occasionally they leave the line open for a few seconds when they sign off before intervals and you here polite banter in the background.

This is only an almighty cock-up if the commentator is trying to have a clandestine affair with the producer - which, given the venerability of certain BBC Essex commentators is probably about as feasible or likely as KP sending a Christmas card to Matt Prior...

Actually, thinking about the timing, it might well have been during the tea interval. Anyway, it was quite a personal conversation (nothing untoward though!) so I imagine they were quite mortified to find out it had been broadcast.

My mate heard it and reckoned some "chatting up" was going on. Outrageous!

i didn't listen on the 23rd but caught a bit of the commentary on the 22nd and thought the 2 guys were superb, although one did have to keep reminding the other they were commentating on a game and the listeners might like an update, saying that, all the banter etc did make the commentary very good.

Catch a fair bit of commentary on away games and think Dick and Paul are awful. They troop out the same stories/ prejudices over and over again. They glorifying in not having a scorecard, not knowing who is playing, not having internet connection .

They have developed a technique to get through a commentary session which is mainly bluff and bluster. Listen to county matches on 5 live extra and you'll find intelligent, informed, humorous and professional commentaries.

They'd fit in well at the Hayes Close End.

That's why they're so popular - they blend in with the club...sorry VP stole your line.

They are? Bit too critical for your liking are they? Have you any idea how difficult it is to say fresh things, covering the meandering county cricket program? Perhaps ECCC can appoint their own non-critical commentary team - following the deference of their own interviewer....who always come up with the positives!?  ;)
Who's that David......? who seems to commentate on T20 (BBC Essex) - now he really hasn't got a clue. Too busy bragging about where he's been on holiday - and usually calls the play erroneously. Has an annoying habit of sucking in breath through his clenched teeth at the end of each sentence too!
