Thank you for asking about the Seconds' game - I had not noticed that it is taking place. With reference to recent correspondence on this thread about our Seconds: on the one hand it might be said that it is not constructive to refer to them as a rabble, but on the other hand it could be said that it shows we supporters care strongly about the performance of teams representing our Essex CCC - we just have different ways of expressing ourselves.

Another pretty awful day.  411 runs from 84 overs.  53 extras.  Over the last few years we've not done great but this year seems even worse than usual.

Another shambles. I briefly watched Ben Waring (SLA) play for Hertfordshire the other day. Was with Essex some years ago but he is still a quality bowler.

Maybe he doesn't want anything to do with Essex but he would lift the 2XI standard and could push for a 1XI place.

Hyam and Petini are too cosy,  the team drifts along,  nothing changes and they sit about playing  with their phones and having a laugh.  Nice guys but..........

Maybe he doesn't want anything to do with Essex but he would lift the 2XI standard and could push for a 1XI place.

I totally agree, but the club runs the Academy and like other Counties, the way forward is known as the pathway, which is simply you play for the academy and if good enough develop into the Seconds then the Firsts.

I think Paul Walter was the last club cricketer to break through our system and I am unsure if we had an academy then?

Other Counties are the same, club cricketers are not considered, but if you look at the performances of our 2nd X1 cricketers at the weekend for there clubs then you will realise that we either have a bunch of under achievers or players that are simply not good enough.

Brian Hardie and Brian Edmeades were found by looking in Scotland. RTD was discovered in Holland. With the academy/pathway. There have been players who never made the team. Or doing an Aaron Beard, in flunking out a few years later.

There are plenty of players name-dropped, who are claimed to be. The best thing since sliced bread. Yes, Mother's Pride.

Alastair Cook was in the first Academy intake, so we definitely had an academy then.

They didn't even manage to pick 11 players yesterday.  There were only 10 players listed at the start and only 10 batted.  It seems we have another Thain that can score hundreds against second XI level bowling attacks in 50 over cricket.
