Somerset have a very strong bowling unit but this was a pretty naive run chase. Walter went for a big hit when we needed 7.5 an over; Westley needed to show his experience etc. Rossington has little value. He is a poor keeper and if he is not scoring runs he is clearly a complete waste of space. We’re not too far off but the loss of Khushi and Lawrence was crucial

That was shocking. Fine innings from
Pepper, but the rest made a bit of a mess of it. Disappointing.

Once again our lack of batting nous tells against us. Good knock by Pepper but it needed someone else to stay with him for a while. Somerset certainly bowled well in defence of their small total, but feels like we lost that rather than them winning it. We managed to lose 4 wickets in 9 balls at the end.

A typical example of bazballing a game which we did not need too . Every bat looked like they were likely to get out than play a decent innings . Shoddy, after a decent effort in the field .

How depressing to see yet again, we snatch defeat from jaws of victory.

Bowling good, particularly Henry who grabbed the crucial wicket of Harmer with a great  yorker, but another failure batting wise by Sams, who once upon a time would score a quick eye catching 30 off 15 balls.

Just a shadow of himself.

The run out to clinch victory for Somerset belonged in a Laurel and Hatdy film.

We can bowl brilliantly, and often do but if we can’t knock off modest totals we are really struggling.

Cannot see much light ahead of a long dark tunnel.

You can tell just by the Somerset celebrations that they knew they had got out of jail there and had won a match they really had no right to after their poor batting and some very good Essex bowling.
Step forward our quality batsmen who once again manage to completely mess up a run chase with some utterly brainless batting!
We have too many so called "all rounders" who aren't!!! (Rossington, Walter, Sams & Snater).
Tuesday now already seems like a "must win" match!

8 matches of Friday ~ -16 innings - Essex score was the lowest.
8 games today - 16 innings - Essex score was the lowest.
Tells the story !!
Sadly we are a team in decline probably in the  championship as well - we have had the good times.

Yep especially the development of batsmen. When was the last time we had an England u19 batsman? Lawrence nearly 10 years ago. Not good enough.

we have had the good times.

Maybe.

But it wasn't that long ago when good times were a distant memory.

‪I’m being deadly serious here, get Alastair Cook out of the commentary box and back in the T20 side. No way we lose that with him at the top of the order. ‬

Agreed.
Name the batsman with the highest T20 average for Essex, since records began.
Sir Chef with an average of 37 and a strike rate of 131.58.

Agreed totally, but I think you’ll find The Chef is VERY happy being in the commentary box rather than thrashing around for a few overs every couple of days or so!!
Probably earning more money too and certainly contributing to his post playing days pension!

It seems to me that batting has been an issue for us ever since T20 was first dreamed up. The occasional spectacular innings (Napier, Delport, Chopra) but mostly we've been a bit below par, usually relying on 30s and 40s rather than major innings. Even when we won the comp in 2019, our batting was just about good enough rather than truly dominant. When you scroll through the scores from other counties, there generally seems to be someone who has scored something like 80 off 35 balls, and not always overseas stars either - often it's middling county players who have worked out how to play this format, in a way very few of our guys ever have. In recent times, Pepper appears to be the only one who's worked out how to go about it. Which is odd, since there are, at least in theory, much more accomplished players than him in our line-up.

There's also the need to adapt to the match situation - yesterday's chase didn't actually need big-hitting firepower, but it did need players to keep their heads and not keep holing out going for glory.

Dunno.. am I being unfair? Would supporters of other counties say the same about their teams?
