Probably too little too late, but good to see that Essex finally adopted a risk, reward approach to this must win game by selecting Porter premium pace bowler, ahead I presume of the hapless Beard.

Risk, he might get injured and not spearhead our final thrust to Championship glory.

Reward - surprise, surprise, Porters rips out Surrey’s powerhouse top order, finishing with 4-38 and vying with Ravi for man of the match.

Faint heart and all that!! Oh that he had been selected for the Hampshire game.

Beard got injured in the warm up, that's why Porter played.  Neither are particularly good T20 bowlers, especially at the death.  Porter got a bit lucky yesterday as you can in T20, just like we have been a little bit lucky with the ball in the last 3 matches in the power play.  Against Sussex Salt, Wright and Carey all gifted their wickets in the Sussex powerplay, Vince and Roussow against Hampshire and the top 3 Surrey batsman did yesterday.

Or unlucky as witnessed by the fact that our best bowler managed the same amount of wickets as our worst bowler.

The extraordinary finish to the South group, once again emphasises how unfair the north/south divide is. Eight teams can still qualify in the south and even Glamorgan have been competitive in recent seasons. At the outset it is impossible to predict which 4 teams will qualify from the southern group. However the Northern group was settled with a couple of games to go. It contains teams such as Leicester, Northants, Yorkshire and Durham that are truly awful and have been for a few years. It is some time since Northants won the thing. Although the actual tournament winners may come from the northern group it is far easier for them to qualify.
It was suggested a while ago that 20/20 be played in two divisions with promotion and relegation. I think that would be far fairer unless they just play the current thing on a random draw basis. Before people site the importance of local derbies, I really do not think that the average attendee at a match cares less who the opposition is. I heard today that since it's inception Derby have only qualified for two qtr finals before this season and had therefore only played two southern opponents ever!

Cracks me up on here when people write a load of drivel having clearly not watched the match

Just out of interest, did you?
I did & I've put down my thoughts as I see it!

Agree to an extent, Derby have never been to Finals Day (only County not to), I too have always felt the South Group is much tougher & any 4 from 9 is the norm, in the North you can usually expect Lancs, Notts Warwicks (not Birmingham) Worcs to be involved with the rest generally nowhere, groups at random would greatly the travelling & few would travel to ,say, Durham for a Group game whereas Lords & The Oval normally sees huge volumes of Essex fans.

Yes I did via the live stream and absolutely agree we are all entitled to our opinions. What I do question is when someone clearly hasn't watched and comes on here and slates/praises players without any substance behind it, rightly or wrongly I tend to only post when I have seen enough to form my own opinion, right or wrong.
