I watched that game in 1971. Bruce Francis was our overseas player at the time. I think Robin Hobbs finally removed Boycott with a dubious LBW decision.

Maybe the umpire had seen enough of him.

What were the merits and drawbacks of the ground compared to Castle Park? I assume the ground is drier?

That was the reason moving to the Garrison, but it wasn't a popular venue and - even given our poor start to the 1972 season* - the numbers attending games were well down compared to those attending the Park. Despite it's venerability to flooding and rain-sodden conditions, it was still preferred to the Garrison Ground by supporters.

*Ironically the last CC match there was also the first win of the season for Essex.
