On Fast Bowling
« on: December 14, 2017, 08:35:06 AM »
Excellent article on the bbc website, www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/42287181, well worth a read

Interesting to note Ball is 2nd fastest England bowler - he doesn't look it to the naked eye (at least mine), and Hazlewood's also faster than he looks.

A really telling point from our old friend NoPaint - "can we run faster, jump higher or throw further? The answer to all of the questions is yes, so why should fast bowling buck the trend of biomechanics?" Answers on a postcard, please!

And the point is ...?

All the best bowlers that ever lived were either spinners or medium/fast (Take a look at the stats). Fast bowling is for vanity, useful on occasion but ultimately won't win many games. Jake Ball would be well advised to have a chat with David Masters/John Lever/any number of other medium/fast bowlers, learn how to move the ball and cut his pace to early 80s.

NoPaint has a living to earn and is selling snake oil.

“Fast bowling is for vanity, useful on occasion but ultimately won't win many games” – what planet are you living on, Nat? Try telling that to a few great captains like Clive Lloyd, Ricky Pontin, Steve Waugh, Michael Vaughan, Graham Smith  …… I can hear their howls of laughter already.

On some pitches, especially in England / NZ, accurate 80mph will do the job, and in the Indian subcontnent spin is still (usually) king, but even in these places show me a skipper who still would NOT want some real pace in his locker rather than have what Salim Malik once called “a pop-gun attack”.

As for NoPaint, he’s raised a couple of interesting questions – maybe addressing them would be more interesting than chucking abuse at him?
