It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of Brian 'Chunky' Savill.

He died suddenly this afternoon at Coggeshall Cricket Club doing what he loved doing - scoring cricket matches.

Many will remember Chunky as a father to Ryan, Kieran and Gregan who have all played for Colchester at some point in their careers.

However Chunky was a true legend for all the voluntary work he also performed. He scored and was match manager for the Men's 1st XI for a number of years and was also fixture secretary and availability secretary in that period.

Only just last Sunday he scored for our 1st XI as a favour as Wivenhoe did not have a game.

He will be sorely missed by everyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting him and the Colchester cricket scene will be without the services of a truly great man.

Our thoughts at the cricket club are with his wife Jane and sons Ryan, Kieran and Gregan.

I will be in touch with details of the funeral arrangements as soon as I hear anything.

Andrew Kennedy (Chairman of CEECC)

Those who don't follow Club cricket might remember him as the person collating the Duckworth Lewis Method at T20 games at Essex.

A fine gent. RIP Chunky

There were about 300 at Colchester Crematorium to say goodbye to Chunky. Some in their bright Club colours, some others wearing ties or badges denoting other aspects of Chunky's community interests.

I felt lucky enough to be in the overflow outside of the main chapel when, after his wife's splendid obituary, I was able to listen to what sounded like a Meadow pipit's beautiful song until Chunky's body disappeared behind the drawn curtains whilst "Soul Limbo" (the TMS theme) played.

Everything about the funeral ; the weather, camaraderie, humour and of course respect for Chunky all seemed a perfectly fitting send-off for a man of true character and of whom , I'm sure, we all felt privileged to have known and met.
