In my opinion absenting yourself from the first day of the season hoping that nothing will go wrong is a serious misjudgement.

Are the club going to give Grayson a final warning about his conduct and absence?

Considering that he was running for the Lords Taverners and that entries for the marathon would have been confirmed before the fixtures were released then I am sure that he ran with the full blessing of the club.

Have a pop at the batsmen; they were the ones who did not perform.

If Amazing Grayson absented himself from the job without the club's full blessing, then that would be pretty much tantamount to effectively handing in his resignation (at least it would've been in most of the jobs I've worked in).

If the club gave him their blessing to be absent from the first day of the County Championship, then that's a telling sign of the lack of importance they give to the four-day game. I'm guessing they wouldn't've consented to his request to be absent for the first T20 match.

Anyway, it seems that Essex's batters are useless both with Grayson and without him. Which makes one wonder what the point of him is.

A bit harsh I think.
As another poster said, Larry's job was to prepare the players, there's little he could have done (at least technically) during the collapse. However, as coach/manager/mentor to the players I personally think him running the marathon and raising money for charity is inspirational on a professional and human level. Did you see Neil Burns' opinions on coaching recently?
This strikes me as a little knee jerk. Would you be complaining about this issue if we'd made a good start to the season?

Errrrr, "he didn't even win". You've missed the point there.
Deliberately????
Apologies if I've missed some irony in your post.

Absolutely not knee-jerk. If you look, Burns has been involved with London County for many years, providing an alternative to the county set up for developing young players. He's also the one established players go to if the county set-up isn't helping their development. Did you see his comment about 'old boys' clogging up the county coaching system? Ring any bells for a certain D2 club?

If anything, what the recent slump has shown is how the benefits of S*Y money, central contracts etc has been offset by the same old idiots running the game at national and county levels. By bringing in imports from other countries, the weakness of the youth development system have been papered over.

Not enough kids playing at grass roots, too many put off a career unnecessarily or prematurely by an inflexible system. Note how the best development recently has been the Unicorns, which tries to compensate for the county system's deficiencies.

Sorry Andy.
Please read the post properly.
You will see that the "knee jerk" comment was aimed at the posters attacking Grayson for running in the marathon.
Not the Burns' comments which, I'm happy to see you agree with me on, were used to defend Grayson's actions.
By the way, I think I used to play cricket with you.

No need to apologise, just a missing word confsued the point - which was correct.

Incidently, I think your reference to me 'playing' cricket is stretching the point.
