Corridor of Uncertainty quiz
« on: June 28, 2014, 11:18:37 AM »
Stumbled across this website for a certain northern CCC with some questions about ECCC from Chelmsford HMP, strangely.

From the County Ground, Chelmsford, home of match fixing in cricket, the inmates of HMP Chelmsford on day release have kindly used some of their spare time to devise this cricket quiz specially for members of the Corridor of Uncertainty.

1. How did Trevor Bailey come to be nown as "The Boil"?

2. How did Keith Fletcher come to be known as "The Gnome"?

3. Which Essex cricketer also kept goal for Super Hoops Queens Park Rangers?

4. He was a 'shamateur', a Wisden cricketer of the year and the man responsible for the nickname of one of cricket's best lover writers. He also had a connection with a word in frequent use on general election night.
a) Who is he?
b) For whose nickname was he responsible?
c) What is the connection with the election night word?

5.Which player was Essex II XI ( Stiffs) captain between two former England captains who had that role?

In order to qualify for the Sky Sports bonus payment Essex have asked the following question as well....

Sky Sports bonus question - Which Sky Sports cricket commentator plays in the same Premier League cricket club side ( not Essex based ) as the son of another Sky Sports cricket commentator, what is the club side, and who is the father? For which first class teams did the commentator play?

Incidentally, there's a frequent poster on the aforementioned website who goes on incessantly about breaking tiles on the Frinton O-S pavilion; that ECCC are a bunch of match-fixers and has an irrational hatred of our own dear Andy Flower.

Any clues as to his identity???

Diatribe

Someone who drones on irrationally on the same subject, day after day? Shane Warne.

In answer to some of the questions -
1 - Bailey was a stubborn batsman hard to dislodge & I believe in a Test some frustrated Aussie fans gave him some stick calling him a barnacle amongst other things ,it also seemed that they called him Bailey in a bad Aussie accent which was interpreted as Boiley & subsequently shortened to Boil.
4 - Charlie McGahey who when dismissed by R C Robertson Glasgow of Somerset came into the Pavilion moaning about being bowled by somebody who he didn't think now existed & had been stranded on a Desert Island ie he thought his name was R C Robinson Crusoe, so the nickname stuck.
5 - Fletch must have been one of the Captains, I believe Mike Denness was the other so my guess would be Ray East as I know he also captained the 2nds when he dropped down from the 1st team.
I have no idea of the other answers but I'm sure some people will.

Fletcher was called "the Gnome" because when he first joined the team he walked into the dressing room wearing a pair of then teenage fashionable winkle-picker shoes.

Micky Bear remarked that "we've got ourselves a garden gnome!"

It stuck!

Well ECCC, with the honourable exception of Tony Palladino, collectively turned a blind eye when our corrupt former leg spinner was doing his worst.

Think Johnners referred to East London oiks instead of antipodean convicts for number 1, but he was never that reliable a source! I think the other two, plus Square's answers are correct. Still no takers for Q3 or my Bonus question?????
