Middle East war leads to a shortage of Duke's balls
« on: March 19, 2026, 11:40:18 AM »

I'm sure they've got loads of left over Kookaburras from last season.

"We've got plenty of stuff in the factories in the subcontinent ready to go, but the airlines are not taking the freight, because there?s a logjam," Dukes owner Dilip Jajodia told the Daily Mail.

The rates have gone up too. A box of 120 cricket balls would be charged normally by airlines at about $5 a kilo. The last quote I got was $15 a kilo. Most of the stuff goes through the Middle East, but if you?ve suddenly got rockets flying around, you?ve got a major problem."

Dukes are made from leather taken from British cows, which is then tanned in Chesterfield. However, the leather is then shipped to South Asia where it's stitched into balls, and then shipped back to the UK. The difficulties in shipping the balls back once they've been stitched together means that Dukes have given each county only 50 per cent of the balls they need for the entire season."

Just wait for the ground announcement after 80 overs. "Is there anyone in the crowd that has a ball with them?".

There is a blooper from a Rugby game in Ireland. When the ball was lost, and it dawned on everyone, there was no replacement.

Some years ago in a match I was umpiring one bloke had bashed so many sixes into a dense wood that it was touch and go whether we would have enough balls left to finish the match. Fortunately he got himself out just in time.

When Essex played Lancashire at an out ground recently. The ball was hit into the long grass. There was advice, that it had been found. Unfortunately, it was a red one, not a white one.

Remember at Castle Park, Colchester umpire Harold Bird went on one after he realised that the fielding team had not given him the ball at the end of play for the day and it was not in his possession.
Imagine the commotion.

If only this country had enough women with the skills to stitch British hides onto British balls?

Many years ago, there were Women who stitched leather footballs together. Who similarly to the long bow men at Agincourt, had a physically characteristic. In this case, with the hands.

Due to the shortage of the Duke ball , ECB will be using the American baseball ball for this years Hundred competition . The positive is it is cheaper, same colour and the crowd can keep any ball hit for six in the true American tradition, said a ECB spokesman .

In Baseball tradition. When a six is hit, there is a fight over possession of the ball, amongst the crowd. If a ball going for six is intercepted, resulting in the Umpire signalling four. Then if the batting side loses by 1 run, or it is a tie. The person responsible, is to be lynched.
