T20 at the county ground
« on: June 05, 2017, 06:03:14 PM »
Saw the second of two T20 games today, both defeats for Essex. It is sad but true that T20 cricket has the propensity to produce very one sided games which foretell the result long before the actual finish. I watched a club match on Saturday where the run rate was about 2.7 over 100 overs. It was not just interesting it was nerve wracking. More depth = more flavour

Looking at the teams, Gloucester pretty much brought their first team.  Not surprising that the games were one sided.  You get good and bad games whatever the format.  I think a good 4/5 day game is the best game myself as well but you do get a lot of one sided matches in that as well.

Glo 132-2 off 9 overs! Walter, Dixon and Bopara would have bowled ... perhaps. Doesn't auger well.

Bopara didn't bowl. No one bowled well, Walter dreadful, first ball four to the members restaurant, second ball six over it !

In case there is a news blackout, The 3 day game moved to Billericay and after an Essex declaration and 6 more overs batting by Gloucs,  Essex were set 379 from 88 ov this morning

99 all out with that demon bowler Kieran  Noema- Barnett taking 7 for not many  I think (15?  waiting to find out). (He had taken  5 wkts for 3 runs at lunch)

A very weak batting side we put out.  If Chopra and Wheater aren't in the first team squad why are they not playing for the 2nd team?  Zaidi could have played as well.  He's in the squad tomorrow but is likely to be left out along with Walter, who did play.  Chopra will be back soon for the 50 over SF and one or both of them are likely to needed for the next match after Surrey when it's very possible Westley and Lawrence could be playing in the 4 day England Lions match.

Should we read too much into 2nd XI games? I ask this, on the one hand, whether the club/players care that much and, secondly, whether they should care about these matches.

Contracted players should care. Otherwise they will soon be uncontracted players e.g. Velani. Can't understand why Joe Ellis-Grewal is still playing in the 2XI. Mid twenties, little 2XI success over several years.

The bowling on view from Essex yesterday was mostly dire, and the body language in the field poor. One thing I've noticed about 2nd XI games is that there's hardly ever a committee member present. Do players pick up on a perception that these games don't matter?

The relevance of 2nd xi cricket and how it is approached is a matter of interpretation but it must have some relevance in the overall scheme of things otherwise Fletcher wouldn't be attending almost every day. He is not there in a private capacity simply to boost his number of days cricket watching.
