Was it planned to take down the practice marquee this week or did it have to come down due to the high winds ?
-
Hi, it was always the plan to take down this week, certainly strong winds however! ;)

Do I remember the press tent at Colchester blowing over one day, years ago, or did I dream it?

I think you are right.
Perhaps Blowers was in attendance,

Maybe one day the entire rickety pavilion will blow away with Larry in it.
Although the land of Oz would seem terribly sensible after all his years at Essex I expect.
Less munchkins for starters ...

I have a distinct memory of sitting in the members' enclosure at Castle Park on a windy day and watching the tent next to the scoreboard being upended by a gust of wind. Sometime in the 80s or early 90s, I'd guess... But when you get to a certain age, what are dreams and what are actual memories tend to get confused, I find.

I remember at a windy and wet Sunday league game at Colchester. A small shed being blown over and into the river.

Yes- the tent at Colchester definitely did blow over - I was there. That made me think about the most unpleasant days when the team have played. I was at Fenners when they came off for cold - early 1980s - but also Ilford 1980 comes to mind when half the team had flu when we played Somerset. A bitterly cold windy day in early May, which I think was the Bank Holiday Monday and the day the SAS lifted the Iranian embassy siege.

Yep three players unable to bat on the last day ... but the team still got a draw! Hardie and Fletcher batted most of the day IIRC.

Whereas now we go in with at least 5 players unable to bat every day.

I was there at VP for that & you are correct, Fletch & Hardie batted nearly all day with increasing ease, sadly both were out in the 90's & then to cap Somerset's day Goochie walked out in about 3 sweaters & we comfortably drew a game we should have lost easily.

This thread is proving a bit of a revelation. The way some people talk on here, you'd think uncomfortable weather conditions were the preserve of Garon Park.

The difference being the quoted examples were exceptions to the rule.
Whereas force 9 gales were the norm at Barren Park.
