I think we should big up Nigel Hilliard for his part in English cricket's decline.

Not content with running Essex into the ground he is also Giles Clarke's biggest cheerleader.

The scheduling of this 50 over cup, driven by TV is crackers. The final should be tomorrow. Gillette cup finals were always this weekend and with no top football an opportunity lost this year.

I saw some of last night's game & the first thing I noticed was how sparse the crowd was especially at a large Test venue & for a Semi Final at that!
Ticket prices were reasonable but people won't come out to watch evening cricket at this time of year (Essex please note), next year assuming we have 4 Group games we should at the very least have 2 daytime games (or 1 daytime & 1 Sunday) with no more than 2 evening games preferably the earlier home games while the weather is more likely to be warmer.

Well said.
I think it was Lancs that pressed for the  day 50 over game this season, otherwise all our Royal London home games would have been day/ nighters -it's no fun when the dew comes down.

Ticket prices have been reasonable to be fair. I was surprised the QF was free to  members, for example. I got an e mail from Lords offering kids tickets for the final for £1 the other day.

.... I got an e mail from Lords offering kids tickets for the final for £1 the other day.

That's the problem ... they can't even give the tickets away. Big problems ahead... and all of the ECB's own making.

According to Danny we asked for a midweek daytime game and a saturday daytime game.  Which we obviously didn't get.  Would the usual midweek members turn out for a saturday, or is that reserved for bowls/gardening etc?

Saturday wouldn't be a great day in August because football would have started. Personally I'd always opt for cricket given the choice but many would go for football. I remember a crucial championship match circa 1990 with Essex pressing for a win which would given them a chance of the title and people left at lunchtime to watch various football teams.

Ah! but that was back in the good ole days when one didn't have to requisition a wheelbarrow to convey one's cash to gain admittance to a football game. ;D

Dobell writes some good stuff but is he forgetting that t20 has taken that market now that he talks about - if this was the t20 semi final it would have been virtually if not sold out.

my season ticket to the 'Ammers works out at £29 a game.  given that a T20 ticket to a non member is now nearly £30, I reckon it's equivalent value, however, you do have to fork out 565 quid to get that discount, the rest of the  tickets to non STH's run to about 70 a pop in a few area's of the ground.

Having said all of that, I'd probably have gone and watched Essex in a quarter final over football.  And so would a fair few of the lads.  although at the start of August, we didn't realise we were actually going to see decent football from the boys in Claret and blue....above Arsenal after 7 games is always nice.....Above Liverpool and Everton is wonderful....
