Title: Clueless
Post by: tonk on July 19, 2014, 06:33:07 AM
Well the Lords pitch was a beauty for our much vaunted bowling attack but India still managed to get double what they should have.Seems everyone can see what is going wrong except those on the park(and dressing room) but nobody seems to able to alter things.I know Cook has been let down by some of the players but the selectors don't help by keep picking Prior who only ever got picked because he could bat and Cook himself has shown again that he does not have "it" as a captain.

IMO Cook should only play red ball cricket - either for England or Essex. His job is to score loads of runs in test matches and anchor the England innings. Not playing for Essex between the two test series was a sign of weakness when clearly he needed match practice in a less pressurised environment. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he packs it in and goes off to his wife's family farm.

Prior hasn't had a good press at all this Summer in company with Cook & also Bell who is also struggling but isn't being crucified like Ally is. Prior has put down 6 catches in Tests this Summer & batting wise is also struggling, trouble is who would replace him?

Foakes?
If the received wisdom at Lords has it's way.

Otherwise Wheater.

Foster, he can skipper them as well.

Well I suppose there aren't points deductions in test matches ...

No, but the skipper loses half his match fee.

Shows that a posh education doesn't necessarily mean an intelligent captain.

Stop banging the ball in short, put ina third man, don't keep reaching for the ball when batting, just tip and run and the bad balls will come...

Never understood the modern thinking of no third man. I'd like to see a scoring map of most games - bet a good % of runs go down there.

Worse thing is no third man but a fine leg, in case the ball drifts down there. I could understand it if your seamer is firing in at the leg stump in a 20/20. But in a Test match?

Down to the bowlers lack of control.  They like protection against the bad balls but for some reason think it is ok to concede runs from an edge.

What's even worse is Katarina Johnson-Thompson is now out of the Commonwealth Games.  :'( :'( :'( :'(

I will not swear...

I reckon the England batsmen were given a preview of the teatime cakes trolley at lunchtime. Wanted to avoid the queue.

What's even worse is Katarina Johnson-Thompson is now out of the Commonwealth Games.

Is she the new England men's cricket captain then? Could do worse.

Maybe it's time to bring back Atherton.

He was in charge the last time England were this bad.

Oh no. Heptathalete. Could still handle the England attack better than Chef.  ;)

Yes. And I was thinking that her ability to do a variety of things well might make her an asset to the England team.

Don't go there. Just don't go there.

I was there today. If Sharma can bounce them out like that what on earth will the Aussies and South Africans do? Ali didn't play the rising ball well, Prior's shot was brainless, Stokes abject and Root should have learned from what he'd just seen. Bopara would be a better batting all rounder than Stokes and Foster or Read should come in for Prior.

Won't happen though.

Stokes is in the team at 8, so as a bowling all rounder.  I'm sure Jordan will be back for the next test.  Buttler was on standby for this match so I would think Prior will be dropped for him.

Re Moeen Ali, before the days of helmets, the best batsmen swayed out of he way but never took their eyes off the ball. An art that has been all but lost.

Sitting at Lord's watching the post lunch carnage, I wondered just exactly who gave the instructions (Cook? Moores?) for the afternoon's tactics. In the morning they had seen Root & Ali slowly claw back a semblance of a chance of winning the match by careful/watchful cricket. After lunch it was all guns blazing and we gifted Sharma three wickets (Prior,Stokes & Root) with needless shots. Root and Prior in particular are perfectly capable of letting short pitched balls go through. Dhoni/Sharma would have soon tired of this tactic but we abandoned Test cricket for some T20 shots. Brainless is spot on.

I blame Prior.

He tried to hook/pull every ball.

That's probably because that was the only part of his body still functioning.

His brain certainly wasn't.
