Title: Full Members Numbers V2
Post by: stickyboy on July 18, 2014, 07:34:53 AM
A good post lost by BlueEagles in the last one with questions that need answering rather than brushing under the carpet

Danny,

I'm surprised with your comment that Full Member volumes have decreased due to ill health. Without appearing ageist, surely that would have more of an impact on our Senior Members i.e 65 years +. Ironically, their member volumes increased slightly in 2013.

I know and have spoken to many Ex Full Members and their reasons for not renewing are as follows: 1) The demise of the very profitable Southend Festival, in particular the way the decision was made and subsequently implemented. 2) The erratic and on occasions, pathetic performances of the team. 3) The apathy with our Committees. The perception is they are arrogant, parochial, complacent and not transparent. 4) The No Refund Policy for inclement weather etc..

For your information, during the past 2 years I have completed various on line feedback forms, suggestion forms and even re-arranged a work commitment to attend the Focus group meeting, which was cancelled at the 11th hour. To this day I have never had the courtesy of an acknowledgement let alone an apology!! That said, I will send you my updated ideas in due course.

Thanks for post

We are working behind the scenes on new packages and benefits for 2015

There is no golden nugget to increase membership levels.

An email was sent to those due to attend the last focus group, we only cancelled this as we had so few people attending. Very difficult to gather feedback with so few people

I am more than happy to arrange another one if we can get the numbers needed, eg 10 or more. I and we truly value feedback (good and bad), the drop off in membership numbers is something we are daily addressing and doing all we can to reverse.

Adding to that, to run a refund policy for rain days for members would be exceptionally difficult to run.

We allow for the odd day lost when we set membership rates. Worth remembering every penny we save is another penny we put back into the playing budget.

Thanks, Danny

I think the break even point on membership is around 10 days attendance. I think I worked out life membership breaks even at around 14 years. Compare that to a football season ticket and it's good value.

I don't go to much T20 (I'm not anti T20 but as someone of working age I'm limited to the amount of cricket I can go to and tend to opt for a full day's play). To me the key is playing enterprising championship cricket at times when people can go and at times of year when the weather is likely to be conducive. That will attract people to join.

Thanks, Danny

Perhaps you will understand why so many of us are concerned about how this money is spent!

I think several of us have given reasonable ideas to help. Perhaps it would be useful for you to summarise on this forum what steps you are taking to increase membership.

That is work in progress for the coming weeks, would people be willing to attend a focus group? Thanks in advance

Yes, if at a sensible time!

Danny, I would happily come along, and if required, present the idea's I have put up on this board, together with the potential revenue implications.  However, it must be remembered that a lot of us commenting on this issue are the working members.  Please look at meeting timings accordingly.

Happy to assist and act as a sounding board for new membership plans.  Worth getting hold of Square Leg umpire and maybe a couple of others to do same.

Clearly it's to everyone's advantage to increase membership numbers and keep the club running.

Thanks for the thought, Blocky. Would have to be convinced, after the knock-backs that it was worth it though. Don't want to seem negative, but ....

It's in the club's financial interest but seeing as it's seemingly run solely for the benefit of 20/20 fans I don't how current members would benefit.

Thanks, will sort a date and time to suit all as much as possible.

Appreciate feedback, thanks, Danny

The numbers of current members is so few, that it's unsurprising that little change is happening.  critical mass is required.
I assume you don't have a membership currently?

I was daft enough to take out a life membership several years back.

I was naive enough to think it constituted value for money.

If there's one thing I refuse to bet on, it's how long I'm going to live !!!

did you really? wow  I had a look at this a couple of years back when I got made redundant.  I was 47 at the time.  It looked better value from 50 onwards, and then they put the price up! lol...

I still think the membership rtepresents tremendous value, if you are able to get over for the majority of games.  But if you're working, in the city, like me, then it really doesn't give me much.  I'm hoping to get over by about 6.30 tomorrow and catch the last 30 overs or so...but I won't see much of the Lancs game next week.  I can fully understand that people would rather watch cricket in the daytime, especially if they use public transport to travel (although my feeling is the service tends to be less busy the later you travel), which is why I'd love to see a working members package as touted up elsewhere.

Probably better off without membership - its free from tea in championship matches!

Not that any cash-strapped student would sneak in at tea after spending a few hours in the Rivermead library...

I did too. I still reckon it was good value. I'm have my gripes about the way the club is run - the committee structure is so archaic, it beggars belief. The redevelopment is years behind schedule and we have little idea of how the members will benefit, if at all.

But for all that I get enormous pleasure when the team and individual players enjoy success. Would just like to see some success in the CC, although I feel the current team might still struggle in Div 1.

I've been a member for c 30 years and say again, that the subscription, whether life or annual is good value, imho.

I know I've mentioned this before - but when did the club change from being very 'lean' in its corporate structure (i.e. First X1 skipper, Secretary and 2nd XI skipper comprised the committee in the glory years) to this clumsy, oversized structure we have today???

????? I know that Saville was his cousin and Alan Lilley had a strangely close relationship.
