Title: Birmingham Bears (A), quarter final
Post by: dazedpenguin on July 05, 2023, 03:33:22 PM
Lawrence included in the squad.

Harmer, Allison, Beard, Buttleman, Cook, Critchley, Das, Khushi, Lawrence, Nijjar, Pepper, Rossington, Sams, Snater, Walter, Westley

It'll be tough, but the team will have got lots of confidence from the Surrey win.

Thankfully England realise Lawrence is not good enough for England and we’ll get the benefit a little longer

One game shot out, everyone has to be on the top of the game, won and lost on fine margins unless someone gets that more luck . Go for it .

Sorry, I don't know how a professional sportsman can be allowed to let himself get into that shape. The club are obviously turning a blind eye to it. His glovework at home to Middx was painful and his lack of mobility is not helping.
As for taking a quick single......

He's our third best wicket keeper and not making any runs. Currently he's a liability. Need to get him off the wage bill at the end of the season. And you are correct - how can any professional sportsman with any self respect and ambition be so over weight?

Just dont get why we play both Snater and Beard. 2 overs bowled amongst them.

Good bowling performance by Harmer. He always turns it on when it matters.

Got a real chance here. Please Rossington find some form tonight.

Phew! What a game. Never in doubt :-)  Shane Snater take a bow. Birmingham Bears fought well, but Essex just held their nerve.

On to Finals Day. You never know…

Obviously I wanted Warwicks to score 300 so we wouldn't stink the finals day out but, heh,  might as well go and win it now. I love this team

Very, very well done boys. Bit like the Surrey game - seemingly cruising to victory, then collapsing, then pulling it out of the fire with a six. Snater out-thought Hannon-Dalby I reckon - knew it would be the slower ball and was set for it. Phew. I need a lie down.

Well done boys. Very proud. Thought we would be near the bottom of the group before the competition started.

Constantly punching above our weight and great to see so many academy players in the side.

I rarely comment on T20 but I do wonder how we managed to make that game so tight when we simply needed to carry on picking off singles and hitting the bad ball. I hope lots of Essex fans who support the format make it to Edgbaston and have a great day and the team brings home the cup!

Was out, so listened to second innings commentary. I know I'm a broken record, but Dick and Paul really are brilliant when it comes to commentating on T20, especially when we go all calamity Essex every time we look overwhelming favourites to win. Makes a tense match throughly entertaining to listen to.

Finals Day, dodged Somerset in the semi-final and lots of rain forecast for that weekend. We've no right to win it but you never know...

I know all's well that ends well.  But:

1.  We should not have made it so close with needless wickets when already well ahead of the run-rate
2.  I thought Drakes ran across Harmer and blocked his path in the course of the run-out and that should not have been given out.  If Drakes had just stood his ground or held his line, fair enough.  But he did more than that to my eye.  Reminiscent of the Dernbach/Quinn collision at the Oval at the end of the 2018 CC season where I thought the bowler also made deliberate contact.  I would have thought each of those was not out (Quinn was not out anyway) and 5 runs penalty for bowler obstructing batter.  No use asking the fielding captain if he wants to withdraw the appeal - I would have thought that was not out as a matter of the laws in the first place.  All comes under Law 41.5 and it turns on whether the contact by Drakes was deliberate or not.  Can't see how it was not.

In the end it made no difference, but how did other forum members see that incident tonight?

How often does a team sneaking into last play off place, turn form on its head and confound everyone.
Step forward proudly Essex. Fourth beating first.

No easy feat beating Bears on their home ground. A very solid performance, capturing the key wickets of Maxwell and Hain at crucial stages.

Nothing should surprise us about Essex. W have seen them confound us  us for decades.

Toss of a coin. Keeping this topsy turvy season bubbling away nicely.

Excellent performance.

well done boys the games a complete lottery, anyone can beat anyone and as i said Derbyshire beat Warks twice in the much vaunted north group. Bigger grounds suit us, we have as much chance as anyone on finals day.

Das in for Snates please as the tail is too long

Yep some on here will be bit disappointed tonight!

It really must be said no matter what happens rest of the season we are yet again punching above our weight, 2nd in the CC and held our own vs moneybags, into finals day. The club really do deserve credit overall regardless of our in game gripes and certain player concerns.

Great win ( in the end),  but if Walter had a brain he would be dangerous. Needing 6 runs an over, he hits a six first ball, so  just  take easy singles and you are nearly double the run rate
But no, he has to try and hit another maximum, gets caught and singlehandedly caused the late order panic.
I like Walter, but last night he caused me to use words seldom heard in my household!

Yes I agree that the run out was tough. I'd have given not out (and a warning and 5 penalty runs) for blocking off Harmer.

All about coping with pressure, a opportunity of getting ahead of the game . A run a ball on paper is a walk in the park, but do not forget the opposition do not want you to get any, and not every shot you play goes in a gap.
Great team effort.

Presume Eagles have qualified into semi final 1 , which starts at 11-00 hours

It could be advisable to bring in an extra batsMAN but for Beard—definitely not Snater !
He’s probably our best fielder and ,though there hasn’t been such a situation this season,is capable of an explosive 20 or so with the bat down the order.
Admittedly he hasn’t been bowling his full quota  of overs but just look back over the season and count up the number of times he’s dismissed the oppo’s best/top-scoring batsMAN.

Sam’s dismissal was also ridiculous along with Lawrence throwing it away after playing well to guide us to the brink of victory.

Essex captain Simon Harmer:

"I feel for our supporters because we always find a way to make it close but luckily in the last two games we have found a way to be on the winning side.
"Their score was par-ish but the way we batted in the powerplay and the few overs after the powerplay was what got us ahead of the game.
"We were looking at a run a ball from about 10 overs out and that really shifted the pressure back on to them and things can happen very quickly in a T20 game."

Got over the line Captain, that’s all that matters. Will take that every time .

Absolutely not. If Das comes in it should be for Beard. Snater can do exactly what he did and smash it out of the ground. He is experienced now and should definitely play ahead of Beard
