On BBC Essex early Tuesday morning there was a dedication wishing happy birthday to David Orriss of Colchester from your friend Philip. So if you were wondering about them they appear safe and well.
-
Not gone on vacation to the Ukraine?
-
Watching the Athletics from Germany I saw someone wearing an Essex CCC cap. There were two members who you would see regularly in the County ground.
At least at the Athletics unlike a test match you would see some winners from GB.
-
Sadly I haven’t been able to get to the County Ground since 2019, and the way my health is going I don’t see me getting there this year. Just maybe next assuming there’s reasonable disabled parking, and I can find someone to drive me.
-
Another member sighting. On BBC East today there was a news story about Greater Anglia Railways. Brian Waller of Colchester and the Tom Pearce Lower was on film leaving a train at Colchester station.

Saw and spoke to Brian at the football, he has a health issue, which requires regular attendance at the hospital.

In a story in the Evening Echo about a proposed housing development. There is a photograph of somebody who looks familiar. If that is the person, then they are a relativity high worth individual. Unlike a few others they mix with at the County ground, who definitely are not and may well be having Spaghetti Hoops for Christmas dinner.
-
In the Wisden Cricketer there was a news item about Graham Gooch, I believe a honorary life member. He has just been given a new knee.
He got plenty of mileage, out of the old one.
-
In the Echo, amongst the list of people up before the Magistrates, there is the name of a former member. He was involved with benefits and other events, and left due to differences of opinion over a number of matters.
He was caught, driving his car too fast.
-
The news that Andy Davenport had died was delivered at the last game. Andy Davenport and his father, used to operate the old scoreboard and would be seen doing this at the festival grounds.
-
Andy Davenport, collected Football programmes. His mother gave a figure of how much the collection was valued at, for insurance purposes.
They are due to be auctioned shortly, and from the above. They are not the ones that gather dust in non league Football club shops. That are only useful for recycling.

Are you on drugs?
-
No, I am not on drugs. Watch Bargain Hunt and see the expert tell the contestants, to avoid programmes before the 1970s. As the selling price is not worth, the auctioneer getting his gavel out of its box.

Perhaps you should try a real live auction yourself selling football memorabilia. I have and what you ( or your so called Bargain Hunt experts ) say is utter crap. Seen loads of pre 1970 programmes go for serious money.

Re reading, it should have said post 1970s.
Something, that is making blood boil. Is a Football club, not issuing a printed programme. I can remember when programmes were printed for One day games.

Totally agree Vim. But it isn?t just programmes. Books, music, spectator sports have all fallen to the great god ONLINE.
Eventually the planet will disappear up its own backside.
-
I have not been to a football game for a number of years. The lack of a programme did not bother me.
With some Non League clubs and mergers, de mergers and closure, followed by re-opening a few years later. It is interesting to read the club history, to see what was not written, rather than what appears in the programme.
One club, to avoid getting embroiled in legal disputes. Just, do not mention around 20 years of their history at all.

Then in 10 years time some marketing genius will come up with the idea of providing a tangible artefact for fans (I.e. an over priced scorecard).
-
At the last game, complete at home scorecards were provided. The problem was, they should be completed online. Not with a pen.
-
This is someone, who I did not know very well. The members who did, may not frequent this Forum.
Another Andy, who used to be found at the front of the Tom Pearce Upper. At the end adjacent to the River stand. Also died during the off season.

Very sorry to hear that. I notice Leicestershire had a minutes silence at the start of their match for a member of the ?family? who passed away over the winter. A good idea to say farewell as a club to loyal ex members before the new season stars.
-
Essex had a minute's silence for a former member. I was not in attendance, but it was someone I had a dispute with over smoking.
The reaction from an observer, was do not take him on, as he is friends with some of the players.
Really, a useful idiot that can be used and discarded.

Presumably the deceased member was the smoker in the dispute?
-
I don't know any of the people mentioned. I generally sit st Hayes Close or on the public side. I used to talk to a guy named Fred, a working class guy from Braintree, a world war 2 veteran and immensely proud to be a club member. He first watched Essex in the 1920s as a lad. I suspect the powers that be never knew he existed. When he died in about 2009 nothing waa said.
-
Members handbook use to have a select of obituaries of former members of the club.
-
Yes, Andy, you are correct.
I am an ex smoker. It is the case similar to converts from one major religion to another. Being bigger zealots, than those who have been in it since birth.
The problem with putting members obituaries in the Yearbook. In a year, they would take up the entire book.

Because of infirmity ...... sadly, I became a wheelchair user ...... I hadn't managed to attend a game for about three years and then my son managed to take me, and put me in the (rather cold and unwelcoming) wheelchair users space under the Tom Pearce. During the day he went upstairs to where I used to sit but couldn't see any of the people I used to sit with up there.
Rather sad.
I'm a little more mobile now, and hope he'll be able to bring me again this season.
-
There was somebody, who lives outside of Essex. Turned up, looking for people in their usual seats. They had been replaced by strangers.
If he had asked me about them. I would have answered, I do not know where they went and if I did. I would not tell you.
-
My son knew for whom he was looking. He lives abroad, so can't .....,. couldn't ..... come with me more than once or twice a year. I miss my Essex cricket. There's an atmosphere than you can't get on-line.

Thanks for the thought!

When thinking about offering lifts, a cautionary message.
County cricket attracts a few oddballs, beware.

A few?
-
I would say that there is always one. However, there are more than one in practice.
-
Reminds me of the ?joke?:
Chap saw someone thumbing a lift so, feeling generous, stopped.
Where he was going suited the hitchhiker so off they went,
After a bit the hitchhiker said ?how do you feel about me being a murdering psychopath??
To which the driver answered ?What are the chances of having two in the same car??

There was news today of former committee member and possibly still a life member. Sir Alan Hazlehurst passing away. He wrote one book and possibly more about Essex cricket.
