Title: Somerset (H)
Post by: dazedpenguin on June 19, 2022, 01:28:01 PM
Somerset won the toss and put Essex in. Unchanged side:
Rossington, Khushi, Pepper, Critchley, Walter, Sams, Westley, Harmer, Nijjar, Allison, Cook

188/5. Top batting from Pepper and Walter, but if Smeed and Banton get going Somerset could easily chase this.

T20 cricket in a nutshell that. Daniel Sams wins us a game on Friday and costs us a game two days later.

Well that was shocking. Had Sams taken that catch to get Rossouw (well played- much as it pains me to say it) it may have been different, but the Essex fielding seemed to fall apart after that point.

Probably time to take Allison out of the firing line for a bit in favour of Beard or Snater.

Most DEFINITELY time!! Can barely be trusted to bowl more than 2 overs each match and has no variation or pace. To be fair he probably wouldn't have been playing the last couple of matches if Snater had been available.
Him and Nijjar HAVE to be replaced for the next vital couple of matches this coming week.
Great batting from Pepper again, he looks like he could really be a big player for us in the coming years (both with white and red ball).

Allison bowled well in earlier games though, so I can understand why they kept him in for today. T20 isn't Snater's best format, but given his general rate of improvement I'm sure he will get better.

Nijjar is an interesting one. His performances this year don't compare well to last year:

0/43 from 2
1/28 from 3
0/10 from 1
0/26 from 3
0/21 from 1
1/27 from 2
1/43 from 4
0/26 from 2
1/26 from 4

but I think they'll stick with him until Lawrence is fit.

I wouldn’t call 22 overs, 4 wickets for 250 runs interesting. The word I would use is much shorter than that.

He (Allison) has bowled better earlier this season than he has done recently, yes, BUT he’s only being trusted to bowl 2 overs per match nearly every time and as he offers nothing with the bat, can we really afford to play someone who only plays a part time role each match? Snater at least offers a chance of some fast runs and probably wouldn’t be any more expensive either. Is Porter COMPLETELY out of the picture for all T20 matches?

But would any seamer they bring in go for more? That's what I meant. Lawrence can be an effective spinner in T20, but until he's fit who else do they bring in? I don't think they'd risk Benkenstein.

I think they'll replace Allison with Snater, although the final Netherlands game is on Wednesday, so barring a very fast turnaround, someone else will need to come in for the Middlesex game. Presumably Beard will be chosen. Jamal Richards is also in the squad but I guess he's mainly there for the experience- it's a bit early for him.

No idea why Porter doesn't get more of a chance. He was expensive in some games last year, but barring Cook, so have all the other seamers.

I would give Porter a chance personally. I understand why they’d be reluctant to do it, he can’t bat or field and the latter in particular is so important in T20. But Porter is a winner, experienced and always has a wicket in him. I’m not saying he’s perfect, but I reckon he’s the best option. Ultimately changes have to be made because it’s clear the opposition have sussed out that Nijar and Allison are to be targeted as our weak bowlers, which is leaving Harmer and Critchley with too much to do by the time they come on to bowl.

We are certainly finding it very hard to defend any total even one of 240. Sadly Nijar and Allison are being targeted as our weak links and if we wish to progress in the T20 we need to find a solution.

Beard bowling very well for the seconds today…

Despite the loss yesterday, I was expecting us to be rock bottom with that 11 - especially as Alison and Nijaar are simply not up to it, and I have my doubts over Khushi, long-term. Westley has to open, he can find the gaps. He is effectively ‘making up the numbers’ otherwise.

Beard - the forgotten man. Unless he gets a game soon he must be on his way.

Never learnt from their bowling, in keeping the ball up with variable speeds, which became a tidy away victory.
Streaming production was again of amateur status, ( do we pay them or do they pay us ?),  which at times was only interested in showing the crowd. Perhaps a word also to the main sponsors D&B scaffolding, who could supply in getting camera above umpires head from the Hayes Close End so we could see the wicket. The only improvement was showing the replay logo.
Shoddy Sunday all round.

He will play in the 50 over competition.  His chance to show what he can do.

With the streaming and two cameras, in the absence of Peter West could they have got David Acfield to host for that early 90's TV experience.

I know this was a good gag, but I wonder how heavily involved Ackers now is. I think he was one of the committee members who resigned. A shame that the club president had to go like that.
