Oh dear. The Christmas sales have started early this year.
-
don't rate him then?
-
His record is pretty good, definitely better than what we have. We lack 6 hitters which he is good at. It also allows us to get a couple of overseas bowlers like we did last year.
It's our worst format and that's unlikely to change next year but hopefully this guy can atleast provide a bit of entertainment, which didn't have much of last year.
-
Rather have him opening than anyone else we currently have. Good move and will hopefully get us a start
-
If he doesn’t count as an overseas player then it’s a decent signing I guess.
-
South African wth UK passport. Failed at Leicester but let’s see. At least the problem has been identified.

Currently failing a lot in SA too.

Not in T20
Playing for Paarl Rocks in the recent T20 he played 6 games, 5 innings, 197 runs, HS of 84 with 2 fifties and an average of over 39. that will do me. Was playing in the T20 tournament in Nepal, along with lawrence. Wonder if that had anything to do with it??
Also had a strike rate of
169
25
150
166
186
in the SA T20

Hush now everyone. Nat is an expert on South Africa's domestic cricket and the players there.
You only have to look at his early comments in this thread

8) 8) ;D ;D
Seems a decent signing to me as - as others have said - still gives us two overseas choices and he is an experienced 20/20 player.
-
Now we have someone who can tee off up the order, Siddle and a decent spinner will do nicely. Siddle bowled very well for Adelaide in the Big Bash this morning. Id take zampa back. Though he was our most dangerous bowler last year, despite reservations from some about him. failing that, Sodhi, Shadab Khan or Bishoo would do.
-
Well remembered Neil - I hope nat has the grace to blush about his comment.

I think Siddle is not here for the T20. Just the 4 day and 50 overs.
-
I did wonder. I thought there was a chance that he may slip back over to canada and play in their t20. If that is the case Id like to try and bring in an all rounder to go with the spinner. Ben Cutting is looking good in T20 at the moment, he would be a good signing. Runs down the order and bowling well. We still have Quinn, Coles, Cook, Walter, Porter, Plom, Snater and Beard. Plus ravi is quite useful at the end of an innings.

I may have got that slightly wrong. I have upgraded him to 'above average'.
-
When we had Jesse Ryder he didn't come off anywhere near as often as he should but always seemed to give us an impetus at the start with a rapid 20/30, if Delport can do this then all well & good.
-
The bloke gives it a proper whack and loves a maximum. 7 home games for him to fill his boots.
It certainly changes the balance of the team from last year which was completely wrong. Someone above said Siddle isn't available for T20. I'm fairly sure his contract is 2 seasons, all formats.
But if Delport has a Brit Passport, then we can still go after a further oseas....
Zamps back???
-
After Brexit will he still get a visa? (Non international player and not very good). We should be prioritising uk players plus a maximum of a couple of international players. Not carpetbaggers.

I'm no expert on eligibility rules, but as he has a British passport, I wouldn't have thought it would matter if he's an international or not, Brexit or no Brexit.
As for how good he is - I've no idea beyond his stats, which look mildly encouraging. I'd never heard of him, to be honest. Hope he can do a job for us in T20, anyway.
Any idea why he parted with Leicester? Official comments like "The club will not be making any further comment" do make me wonder.

On the interview here at about 5.50 mins in, Bowden says he's signed for two formats for the next two years.

thanks mate. Happy to be corrected...So we still have 2 oseas spots then....
-
Thanks for the link, Jason.
Derek Bowden seems a decent guy and a good communicator - unlike some of the Big Nobs in the cricket admin & management world.
-
Don't see what the issue is.
Literally anyone who can hold a bat would improve the T20 side.

Yes, i know they wanted a gun bat and to keep Zampa.

Brilliant signing. Can anyone confirm if he is available for the 50 over format ?
Will be interesting to see if Cook plays in the T20 games. Presume so. If he does I wonder where that leaves Chopra, who has been our best batsmen in the T20 games recently.
Cook, Delport, Westley, Bopara, Ten Doeschate, Wheater, Harmer, Coles, Porter, Overseas, Overseas.

Id be tempted to play Chopra over Cook, but it a nice change to have that type of problem. Stick in Zampa and Cutting and thats a frisky team

I make that 5 overseas players.

He's not. Arrives on 1st July.
Chopra will play. He was our best batsman in the last 2 years in T20 cricket. I suspect this signing means Cook wont play T20 and if he does I can see no reason Chopra wouldn't play over Westley, who's done nothing in T20 over the last couple of years.
-
Cook will spend the Blast doing Ashes media for Sky/TMS I reckon. Personally I’d have him in the squad, we can’t stoop any lower than we did last season in this format and Cooky would provide some entertainment attempting to slog it! He may shift a few extra tkts as well.
-
Welcome back Zampa. Great signing.

Thing is if we want to be competitive we do have to look at all ways to get good players in
I am sure we'd all love to be winning things with eleven players born and bred in Essex but times have changed and we need to be realistic. We can't compete with the richer teams for quality young players from other counties and there are very few players who have been available, who we could get and who would improve the team. Having said that we do really well with our home growns but they need augmenting
Imagine the team quoted without Delport, Tendo and Harmer. I suspect there would be an awful amount of grumbling on this forum Even more than there usually is! 8) 8)

Not sure Harmer is worth a place in the T20 side.
But as we are paying him all season unlikely to be left out.

It might pay us to give him a bit of a break, after all he puts in a shift in the longer format.
-
Looks like he is returning for 2022.
-
Not that sure.
It was part of the Essex twitter throw back posts. His quote was
“There is a strong squad at Chelmsford and I hope to play my part in getting the Eagles to Finals Day come September.”
Now finals day is in July in 2022 as that's already been announced so I suspect its a bad post
