Grant Flower or Stuart Law, as head coach? Time to step up and make promotion the priority.

Well, it has to be better than this season. Although I should be old enough to stop thinking that by now.

I think if the lads had shown the application earlier that they did after the Lancashire disaster, then things would have been better. Does underline, though the need to give those who might get selected for the IPL the choice; it's either/or. Not both.

However I don't know how the IPL pays it's players. Do they get the set sum from the auction whether they play or not? Are there win bonuses? Bonuses for winning the league? I was given to understand that Shah was only paid by Essex from June 1st.

I don't know, and I'm not asking what individual players are paid at Essex, but if, for example, we weren't paying Mahmood and Shah, could we persaude Tendo to start in April rather than the end of May? I've no objection to him or anyone else playing in the Southern Hemisphere, or even India etc Nov to Feb, but I do draw the line thereafter.

I think as well that the ECB ought to recognise the strain their policies can put on counties. I'm delighted to see the likes of Bopara selected for England squads, but I do think that if they're selected there must be a reasonable chance they'll play. Clearly it's difficult; don't want to change a winning team and all that, and injuries come along, but do the ECB need to keep the whole squad togther all the time?

We have needed a decent new coach for ages, yet I suppose we cannot afford the retirement package.

If we were located north of the border in bonnie wee Scotland, the tax payers would pick up the tab for Larry's retirement plan, they may even continue the funding of his son's public school education.
