Reflecting the increasing weight given to white ball cricket. I wonder how this is going to effect those who only play red ball - Cook, Anderson?

Not necessarily, it's just the combination of overkill and over expectation. Tests cease to become Tests when you allow clueless corrupt third world dictatorships become test class then wind up having to squeeze them in during late winter in the north of England. Less is sometimes more. 50 over cricket will go the same way.
