I see on the Essex website there is an invitation to join a waiting list for 2017 membership. I seem to recall Mr Edwards talking of doing such a thing in the heady days of the 1980s but I guess this is a marketing ploy.?

Is this alluding to the 'wait' for the Year Book? ;D

Looking to appeal to near suicidal West Ham fans?

So is there a limit on the maximum number of members? (I remember talk of this in the 80s too. Don't think it was ever put into practice, even back then.)

Marketing stunt.

Dreamt up by a Mr Cupid Stunt, presumably.

Presume the waiting list is for new members. They won't have decided the pricing yet so wouldn't be ready to accept them yet. With fewer matches they should cut the rates but that won't happen, more likely put them up because we'll be playing stronger opponents.

The original waiting list was brought in to limit membership to a maximum number of 8000. For one season there was around 150 applicants on it. The following season there was an agenda item at the AGM to introduce associate memberships giving access on less busy days. The membership numbers dropped back down again and as I am aware the associate membership option was not followed up.
