Title: Name change
Post by: Valentines Park on November 27, 2013, 12:43:52 AM
Warwickshire are to call themselves Birmingham Bears in T20.

I reckon Essex should do something similar.

West Ham Wannabees seems appropriate given the designs on the Olympic Stadium & the fact Essex haven't won the comp despite concentrating on nothing else for the last 10 years.

I'm going to ignore the pop at my beloved Hammers(which I tend to agree with!)  but surely this alienates the rest of the county?  Lots of Coventry based fans plus all those in the black country, who don't consider themselves Brummies.

We need to leave the football links well alone I'd say.

The Championship is our priority.

Good name. I'd favour that.

I had been going to suggest the Chelmsford Champs (though I somehow keep pronouncing it with a "u" instead of an "a"). But Andy's suggestion is much better.

This must affect the membership scheme's at the club. As pointed out earlier in the thread, why would people in Coventry want to fund a Birmingham Cricket team. The club should be offering a separate Birmingham and Warwickshire membership.
I am originally from Sussex and support them, but if the one day side turned into Brighton I would not support them as I have no affinity to the town. Just seems like County Clubs finding another way to alienate their core membership.

Of course Big City cricket was one of the options touted  for T20 - played on test grounds - when the ECB thought they should or could take on the IPL. It strikes me that most cricket supporters don't live in big cities - just like most premier league football fans don't live near their club's stadium. The logical extension of this sort of thing would be Essex playing all their T20 games at Stratford and calling themsleves East London.

Stratford is no longer part of Essex, after the boundary changes in the 1960's..........Therefore, I recommend that we're called the ' Southend Shrimpers' with ALL the games played at either Garons Park or perhaps at the Blues new stadium at Fossetts Farm!!!!! ........makes sense as Southend is the largest town in Essex!!!!

Second largest Town in Essex, ..... after Basildon.

A good name for us in the LVCC could be the Chelmsford Collapsibles, or the Chelmsford Copouts.

My understanding is that Southend is a unitary authority so administratively isn't part of Essex either. I suggest we play all home T20 games at Halstead and Coggeshall!!!?

.......apologies but I thought this was a cricket forum, not one on local government/politics!!!!  Great shout though regarding Halstead and Coggeshall, logistically it would be very convenient  for our committee!!!!

the speedway team went from Arena Essex to Lakeside Hammers or something like that so i wouldn't put it past the cricket team to have hammers in there somewhere.  at that point i won't even look at results let alone not update my membership.

Please please don't put 'Hammers' in our name in any form of cricket, look at the aggro at Hull with the proposed football name change, also with Cardiff City - the Bluebirds who now play in red!

Considering the the football affiliations of some non-playing staff at Essex it's more likely to contain the name Orient  than anything else  ;)

Unfortunately like the situations at Hull and Cardiff i can't see the people running the club that bothered about any outcry from the fans.  If we opt to use Stratford the name change/amendement and link to the Championship club may be something that will be discussed.

I knew they'd had flooding problems, but hadn't realised it was that bad.

Kudos to Worcestershire who, having adopted the name Worcestershire Rapids for this year's T20 Blast, have perhaps become the first cricket club to shoehorn adverse local weather into the team name. Worcestershire's business development director Jon Graham said: "We thought of a name that combines the regular floods, and this time there literally were rapids lapping up against the side of the buildings at New Road, with the fast paced style of cricket that is synonymous with NatWest T20 Blast." Coming soon to a ground near you: Lancashire Downpours, Durham Numb Fingers, and Nottinghamshire Unexpected And Rather Severe Cranial Sunburn The Week Before You Usher At A Friend's Wedding (don't ask).

Can we please stop this! Name changes in cricket are up to the counties concerned. Changes of names of grounds are done in discussion with the sponsors, who have paid for any change. If you look at the Essex Yearbook I have used whatever each county wants. As for football teams the proposed change of name in Hull is what the new owner wants. I have enough trouble in deciphering what people mean when referring to Hull City and Hull FC. Only two teams in a particular location have had the same name, namely Barrow, who are no longer in the Football League, and Fulham, who are now the London Broncos.
We may as well call the "Tigers" Hull Comet, which is what they were called before 1904.

Yes, till I read the Guardian blog, I hadn't realised that the change was actually flood-related. Well done, Worcs.

Essex Groundhogs

Groundhog Day : A situation in which a series of unwelcome or tedious events appear to be recurring in exactly the same way.

I thought that this thread was going to be about TheDuke changing his name to DT.

Oh well. I like the name Essex Eagles, no need to change it in my opinion.
