ECB get Key man.
« on: April 17, 2022, 01:22:30 PM »
Former England and Kent batter Rob Key has been named the managing director of England men's cricket.
Must have come from a small selection of candidates judging by his time on Sky. Well whatever will wish him well .

I hope they've budgeted for his pie consumption.

"Former England and Kent batter Rob Key has been named the managing director of England men's cricket.

Key takes on the role from Andrew Strauss, who had stepped in on an interim basis following the sacking of Ashley Giles in February."

When Dr Donald Coghan was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, it was questioned. The explanation was that he was the best of a few mediocre candidates.

Who else unless you look abroad could have been considered?

Hated him as a player but didn't mind him as a commentator.

He won't have to do much to be a success in his new role.

As they said about the civil service: an appointment is made either because there was no one else, or there was someone elseā€¦

Rob Key is a disastrous appointment. He has frequently voiced support for less 4-day county cricket.

Inclined to agree Nat. Pity Alec Stewart was not available as he supports the county game.

Agree with the first though, although 'hate' is too strong a word.

Hope he acts thoughtfully and deliberately in his new job, rather than in haste./

A bizarre appointment. A leading administrator from another sport may have been better. I wonder what his reaction would be to this structure review if it advocates chopping or downgrading Kent? I still think the ECB are fundamentally wrong in focusing on big city grounds. The new housing all over England and the move to white collar hybrid working suggests to me that the core audience is more likely to be even more concentrated in towns and villages going forward.

I tend to agree. Clive Woodward could do the job.
