Somerset at Taunton
« on: September 30, 2019, 09:47:02 AM »
What an ending to a great season and a great week!

Alastair Cook, when 20 in his first innings, completed 1000 First Class runs for the season.

Simon Harmer completed his 10th 5-fer of the season with the wicket of Overton

That wraps up the 2019 season - here's to 2020!!

Aztec - thanks for your informative stats throughout the year. A quick question. Do you know the record for 5 wicket hauls in a season by an Essex bowler?
Winter well!

Morris Nichols is credited with 17 five-wicket hauls in 1938. The list starts with 10 in a season so Simon Harmer has just sneaked in at the bottom!!

Thanks very much Aztec. I guess with only half the games being played these days getting 10 such hauls  is exceptionally impressive.

In those days we played something like 28 CC games per season, a fine effort nonetheless & Nichols regularly did the double in the 30s often being the first to do so, a very fine bowler unlucky not to have played (more) for England but he had the likes of Larwood, Voce , Bowes & Allen to compete with.

There was a bench dedicated to Nichols at Witham CC.  Wonder if it's still there?

Apparently MN was an excellent dancer - however, his bowling action has been described as flat-footed.  Seemingly not as sharp as Larwood or Allen and we did have the odd good all-rounder or two at bigger clubs (e.g. Wally Hammond).  Having said this, he probably was unlucky not to have played more.

Indeed the ECCC team of the 1930s bears a lot of resemblance to the ECCC team post-2017: a team comprising players of a standard seemingly not good enough to play regularly for England, but all contributing with bat and/or ball when necessary (or in the case of Farnes, when available).

In fact, probably the Pearce/Wilcox teams are closer in type than the Fletcher era - when we had at least 4 bats and 3 bowlers of clear international class.  This current team has maybe 2 star bats and 2 bowlers.  Controversial?

Maybe Andy. I see similarities with the 1979 team, before the emergence of Foster and Pringle

But that team had Gooch, McEwan, Fletcher and Hardie (who match or are better than our current top order) alongside Lever (Test class) Turner (ODI class) and Nobby (who did play some Test cricket) as well as Ray East (like Turner bizarrely overlooked by England).  All of the above were established cricketers at county and/or international level.

Whilst it's difficult to compare over time, these guys played both red and white (well it was red in those days) with fielding restrictions - and were very athletic in the field.

Didn't Adolf Hitler rob Essex in 1939?

Took another 40 years to chalk up a trophy.
