Essex t20 form
« on: August 08, 2019, 01:20:07 PM »
Idling away my lunch I thought I would look up where we finished in the tables each season:-

2003 - 5 out of 6
2004 - 3 out of 6 - Went through the quarter finals - knocked out by Leics
2005 - 5 out of 6
2006 - 1 out of 6 - Went through to the semi finals - knocked out by Leic
2007 - 3 out of 6
2008 - 2 out of 6 - Went through to the semi finals - knocked out by Kent
2009 - 4 out of 6
2010 - 2 out of 9 - Went through to the semi finals -knocked out by Hamps
2011 - 6 out of 9
2012 - 3 out of 6 - Went through to the quarter finals - knocked out by Somerset
2013 - 3 our of 6 - Went through to the semi finals - knocked out by North
2014 - 1 out of 6 - Went through to the quarter finals - knocked out by Birmingham
2015 - 4 out of 9 - Went through to the quarter finals - knocked out by Birmingham
2016 - 4 out of 9 -  Went through to the quarter finals - knocked out by Notts
2017 - 8 out of 9
2018 - 7 out of 9

So our one day form dropped off 2017 season onwards - same season we were County Champs!

Do we need a T20 / one day coach - one wonders?

My concern is that this has gone over to the 'One Day' game. We were competitive until this year - finished 2 from bottom!

To be honest this will help us in the 'One Day' game.  The worse we play in the T20 the less players we lose to the hundred and the better the players we will have left for the 50 overs!
I think the T20 decline is a result of a few things.
1.  We have done so well in the CC since 2016 that we've naturally focused on that.
2.  The players we have now are more suited to 4 day cricket.  The likes of Porter, Harmer, Browne, the Cooks, Siddle and even Westley and Lawrence, until this season, are far better 4 day players.  It's hard to think of anyone that's come through the Essex system recently, that has produced a lot of good players, who are really good T20 players.  The two recently we produced now both play for Sussex.
3.  Napier, Masters, Pettini, Topley etc have all left and not been missed in 4 day cricket but have in T20.  Even Tim Phillips was a lot better than we have now.
4.  Harmer is a huge problem.  He totally unbalances the side.  His record for Essex in T20 is awful and he's now undroppable as he's the captain.

I think all four of your points have hit the nail firmly on the head.

I'm quite happy for Essex to be useless at the white ball stuff if it means we are still very competitive in the proper cricket. although it wouldn't hurt to be slightly less embarrassingly bad at it!

Talking of embarrassingly bad, PLEASE someone at the club put Harmer out of his misery and take the captaincy away and "rest" him for the rest of this competition, so he's ready and raring to go (and not injured!) for the remaining CC matches.

The thing about Harmer & captaincy is you can bet your life other counties want him.

If the price to pay is a rubbish one day side so be it.

If you’re a spinner without a wrong un delivery, you should not be playing T20 cricket whoever you are.

2008 was our best chance. We had the best limited overs team in the country and a great balance between bat and ball. Our batsman (as they normally do on finals day unless their name is Pettini) bottled the chase.
