Graves claims 'they’ve' done surveys. However, I’ve never seen one published........ that’s not to say they haven’t been........ but professionally i had to be suspicious of people who came selling to my organisation and the ‘surveys’, user reviews, drug trial reports and so on.

Loads of things to query about surveys.

Who did them, what questions were asked ...... and how were the questions asked. Forums, individuals. It’s particularly difficult anyway to ‘survey’ children. Geographical, sociological areas considered. What discussions went on before the survey was constructed, let alone done. What was the brief given to the survey firm. How many firms were asked to quote. If there was only one, what’s it’s reputation. In political polling for example, some organisations have, for whatever reason, better reputations than others, although those poorly regarded firms may have better reputations elsewhere.

None of this has been reported. AFAIK, anyway.

Popularity with the u7s ....up to the u11s is not the problem. They will largely do what they're told by their parents...who want some cheap childcare...trust me... I have seen it and been involved in it.

It is the u13s and upwards where the problem lies.

At least the Essex Faithful aren't alone in thinking Graves is a complete *rseh*le:

Great article. However my sphincter is now considering legal action after being likened to the ECB Chairman.

Nat, I have a  strong suspicion you are correct about this- in my recent experience teaching teenagers of 16-19 , I found they regarded cricket as seriously "uncool", rather like admitting liking jazz, birdwatching, real ale or folk music - those who do like such things tend to keep quiet about them.

I still can't see how Graves' ideas are going to do any good to reach kids/teenagers of any age .... he's like a bull in a china shop, the nearest thing the UK cricket world has produced to our own version of Donald Trump, albeit without the entertaining sex scandals to provide light entertainment.

I wish we would dispense with this having to sign in and out particularly at lunchtime. Why is this necessary when it wasn’t some years ago? Also, do Essex members know of the link up with Newham Borough Council offering 100 free tickets to all CC matches? Is this not an insult to paying membership? I live in a so called “ poor “ Borough yet we are offered nothing like this. Personally I don’t object to paying for cricket but object to free loaders.

Agreed. A bit like eating the seedcorn.

Sorry but I can't agree. Even if all 100 were taken up for the same day there would still be room to spare. The marginal cost to the club is minimal and if even two or three people come again as paying customers, let alone become members, it will have been worthwhile.

If freebies are being dished out to Newham residents it would make sense for a festival to be held in East London.

Can't see many traipsing out to Chelmsford.

Someone else sees the Trump parallel. Really good article:

I like Jonathan Lieuw's comment about interpretive dance.  The last part needs quoting:

It’s blundering, pure and simple: a well-meaning idea that has long been stripped of all merit through incompetence, incoherence and a simple lack of faith in its own product. The ECB may be excited about its chained circus freak of a competition. But at present, you’d struggle to find anyone else who is.

Ten , ten ball overs . Glad they took up my tongue in check suggestion !

But hold on a sec , what about 12th fielder in crowd , hole in bat , hole in wicket , bowling machine to bowl a ten ball over with settings from public interaction  , throw a bucket of water over batsman while crossing,  and  ten minute bet interlude time for various incidents, all ideas on page six .
