I know we're not supposed to like Surrey, but have to say that I admire them for refusing to go with the big ground flow on this issue. Pity our chairman didn't vote with them at the first meeting rather than leaving the door open as he did.

Agreed. Surely even an idiot could detect it was the 'thin end' of an indigestible wedge...then again.

They make more money out of the existing competition than any other county.  The Oval always gets very big crowds.  The new competition would mean them sharing their profits with other counties

Well aware of that and I don't doubt that their position on this owes much to self interest, nevertheless they have increased their crowds over the years to the stage that they are now introducing a ballot for the Middlesex game next year. The ECB plan is all about increasing control over the counties and funnelling funds to the northern and midlands cities bransgroveshire and others who have spent heavily on their grounds, but have failed to attract decent crowds. Anything else is a red herring. Pity Farragher, whatever he says now, did not oppose it at beginning.

Agreed. No one is suggesting that Slurrey are acting out of pure altruism. Whilst they might have certain competitive advantages (only London-based club to own their home ground) they've always been quick to earn the money - whereas those other counties were too quick to spend it...then wonder why they're in trouble when the crowds don't magically flock in.

So the ECB say they won't make the Oval a t20 city venue if they continue to oppose it.  They say they are going to use Beckenham instead. I've heard of downsizing but really.

Beckenham doesn't have the best transport connections & is 10-15 minutes walk from the railway station I think, don't know about parking but it is in a residential area so doubtless there will be Residents Parking only areas etc!!

It does have a bit of roadside parking on one side of the ground but while that is ok for a CC match, it would be completely inadequate for a T20.
