A very good and well reasoned article. The 2 division plus a knock-out competition makes complete sense and builds on what we have now rather than ripping it all up and starting again for the possible benefit of a few counties. Clubs with large grounds can pull in big crowds as Surrey and Middlesex prove, the likes of Warwickshire who fail to miserably despite having a million or more people within 10 miles of the ground have only themselves to blame. Unfortunately at the top of the game we have someone who denigrates a competition run by his organisation, motivated the West Indies to beat England before he even took office and supposedly gave the South African the impression that he could still have a future with England. Compared to that the Essex hierarchy doesn't look too bad.

The most reasoned article that I have read on this subject. Graves has always been a bully and I will be delighted if he "is gone by Christmas". He loaned Yorkshire money for years at rates far above those generally available so he is no benefactor.

Well Northants proved that being a big club does not  automatically brings success.

An excellent article , well written & balanced, while I have no love for Northants it makes me so glad that as the underdogs they managed to win the T20 Blast again over 3 much bigger Counties inc Graves' own Yorkshire (I only have an axe to grind with Graves not Yorks).
Just look at the winners over the years - Leics 3, Somerset, Kent, Sussex, Northants 2, some of the bigger Counties have never won it - Yorks, Notts, Durham.

I sympathise with the petition and have signed it, but I think at the back of it all is a bigger problem. In 2003 when it started in England, T20 was just a bit of a laugh -it wasn't really even new since something similar, sometimes with 8 ball overs, had been played at club level on midsummer evenings in many areas for years. Since then it has become the cuckoo in the nest which is doing its best to throw out the other occupants. You can see this at every level-domestically with the constant changes in scheduling and now the controversy over the Franchise ideas, and internationally with the plethora of tournaments taking players away from Test cricket. Today we have two Tests being played totally out of season, in WI and SA, both virtually washed out, which would not have been played at this time  but for the congestion in the calendar caused by T20.  T20 can be sold very easily as an entertainment to people who don't care about the outcome, which is why yesterday's Finals Day offered only 800 tickets to each of the contestant counties so they could pre-sell it to people who just came for the day out. The way things are going it can only end one way, by forcing red ball cricket further out to the margins or beyond into extinction. We need to ask if we care about that-I'm afraid too many influential people in cricket give every impression of not doing so.

Franchise T20 has been given the green light.

2017 or bust for Essex then.

But we voted in favour. It now has to go to the members so let's see how they try and sell it. Time to force an alliance with Surrey? And Kent and Sussex.

It appears it's franchise cricket and the T20 blast. So there will still be more chances for Essex to claim the holy grail.  As they don't seem to have listened to the petition I hope people will vote with their wallets. I for one will be saving my T20 pounds for Chelmsford.

If Slurry and Middlesex supporters do the same the new competition could be in trouble.

When were members canvassed about this?

Horrible decision by the ECB and Counties :(
If this is to be run along the lines of the IPL and Australia etc i.e. in a concentrated 4+ weeks window, then when on earth is this going to be fitted in?

Hope its a huge failure for ALL concerned, including Essex as we voted for it!

Nice thought but I think pretty unlikely!!!!!.........
Guess it will be along the lines of London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle & Taunton/Brighton?
Don't think too many Derbyshire fans for example, would be too keen to be shouting for "team Nottingham"!!
