So, Cook is available as is Bell, although for me, he doesn't warrant a place at the top or order, especially since this would push Ravi and Tendo further down the order......
Petinni and Ryder to open
-
No, give Cook a rest.
But,if he was available for any 50 over games get him in.
-
Cook should stick to red ball cricket. T20 messes around with his method which is built on leaving balls which in T20 one has to hit.
-
He's not playing.
http://www.essexcricket.org.uk/2015/08/11/alastair-cook-set-to-miss-natwest-t20-blast-quarter-final/
I guess that means all these "injured" players will be back.
-
Realistically the only place that Cook could have took would have been Brownes and that would have meant him coming in at 6/7 or even 8 depending on the match situation.
For me it will be:
Pettini, Ryder, Westley, Bopara, Tendo, Foster, Browne, Napier, Masters, Tait, Topley.
Depending on if the pitch looks like taking spin then Smith may be considered over Browne.

Interesting article on ESPN on the match and the importance to the club
http://www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2015/content/story/908893.html
-
An interesting article.
The man management skills of Paul Grayson may result in a one day trophy this season.
It would be a well desrved outcome for him and a group of players who have consistently performed to a high level in one day cricket.
-
So basically the author lists all of Grayson's failings (including T20 screw ups) & then praises his man management skills.
Beyond belief.
-
A very interesting read & true as well. You do have to ask though why with all this apparent talent at our disposal we haven't as yet won the T20, we have also ,bar Hants, won more List A matches than anyone else, the problem is when to win them ie latter stages of competitions rather than walk the Group then freeze!
It seems either they lack a killer instinct, peak too soon or lose their bottle - there is fight in the team but obviously something is missing & until we find it we will continue to miss out & underachieve.
Personally I would love to see us win T20 before Fossie, Tendo, Napes & DM retire as they have few opportunities left to do it.
-
A trophy for Fozzy would be a nice swansong I suppose.
Being lumbered with Grayson for another decade off the back of it isn't a price worth paying though.

Agree, it really is a catch 22 situation! Would LOVE to see Essex finally win the T20 but then that would more than likely mean at least another 3 seasons of Grayson :(
-
The forecast for Edgbaston tonight and tomorrow means we won't be having a quarter-final...bowl-out here we come!!! Assuming there is only one reserve day???

I think you're missing an 'a' somewhere?
-
This is a bloody hard watch, the way we are fielding, not sure I've seen Foster play this bad before
-
This poor fielding may well make the difference
-
Two players off injured, were they really fit?
Tait really struggling, can't believe the no ball.
Going to be chasing 170+
-
This lot couldn't catch a cold
-
What an absolute shambles. There didn't seem to be any direction whatsoever. We got behind the over rate and then our bowlers were running back to their marks - not a great way to prepare for the next ball. The pitch needed slower bowlers or pace off the ball. Tait was awful. They have a chance to redeem themselves, but that is a seriously tough chase.
-
What a shambles so far
Poor out fielding
Dropped catches
21 extras
Injuries
Fosters worst performance ever behind the stumps?
Tait 3 overs for 37
-
Foster seems to have gone completely. I have seen him drop more catches and let more byes in all competitions in the last eight weeks than the rest of his career put together. Is he injured or is his mind completely elsewhere?
-
Wow, how bad was that.
Somebody has got to do something electric with the bat now.
-
foster will be taking his school mastership soon
-
I wonder if Foster will play again in the championship. Imtiaz was opening the batting for the seconds at Halstead yesterday
-
Birmingham is no place for old men. :-\
-
Although this match was effectively over from the minute that Ravi Yorked himself, why on earth did Browne come in ahead of Foster?
-
Larry's last T20 game....every cloud
-
Because Essex are poorly managed/coached. I don't agree with a lot of others Cook must play, you play your best players. Football teams don't leave their international players out when they come back from playing for their countries! Essex's fielding is (not for the first time) well below the standard it needs to be and that has to be coaching again.
I am afraid we have to realise that until changes are made at the top we are going to stay at this level and that level is not good, as I write this Foster is showing that the batting order was a big error! Oh well there is always 2016!
-
How many mistakes is it possible to make in one game? Essex handed that game to Birmingham on a plate. If it was a football match you would simply believe the team are not playing for the manager. Grayson has to go simply for presiding over a complete shambles. No balls, wides, dropped catches, poor field placings, no understanding of the pitch, poor shot selection, wrong batting order. Total embarrassment against a Birmingham side who aren't that great
-
What a pathetic, embarrassing and shambolic effort from a team who bottle it EVERY time they reach a pressure one off game. UTTER RUBBISH.
-
Although this match was effectively over from the minute that Ravi Yorked himself, why on earth did Browne come in ahead of Foster?
Saving him for the last over?
-
So yet another T20 campaign ends in failure, but the Club will regard it as a success. As Grayson said "The aim at the start of the season was to get out of the group".
Getting out of the group but going no further is not success, it's just not as much of a failure as not getting out of the group.
-
Even Hussain had a dig at the Essex coaching staff in suggesting that they are too slow in responding to conditions, in this case, pace off the ball.
It really was a pitiful and embarrassing performance, how long can this be allowed to go on?
Will Irani act I wonder or was it all weasel words??
-

Couldn't get the proverbial out of his own proverbial.

Listening to TD In the after match interview on Sky, he seemed to hint that he thought Napier should not have played. I wonder how long it will take Napier to recover, reckon he'll miss the rest of the One Day games now as well.
Td seemed to be saying that the performance was not good enough, but that they had been inconsistent all season.
Overall, it was a pathetic performance, bad bowling giving it away to Birmingham, and then batting which meant we lost it from the start. And as for those dropped catches! It all remind me of when I watched England during the last Ashes in Australia! A team in need of a revamp and a new coach
-
The match wasn't lost when Ravi got a superb ball from an excellent spinner - it was lost in the field with Foster at the top of the bill showing again that he is way past it and has been since the Hants saga. That said he should have batted ahead of Browne - you can only assume as Tendo was at the crease that decision came down to Larry... Another moment was Ryder - Nasser called it didn't he...
Anyone else feel this side is going through exactly what the Aussies are at the moment? A team of superb but now ageing mid 30 year old players who are now past their best - sad to say but I think we also need a clear out at the end of this season with a new captain, some new players and fresh ideas. Give Ravi the captaincy in all forms because I think this will reinvigorate his game which has to be fair become stagnant this season. One or two astute signings elsewhere and the youngsters - bye bye Foster, Masters, Napier and possibly even Tendo - fantastic servants but now too injury prone, past their best and fielding has become dreadful - even Tendo dropped a clanger last night. It's hard to say but for the good of the team...
-
- bye bye Foster, Masters, Napier and possibly even Tendo - fantastic servants
I really don't think you can call Tendo a fantastic servant as he only deigns to play once his other commitments are over. Decent player certainly, servant no !
-

As I understand it Masters and Napier signed contract extensions so they will be around next year. There's the rumour on here that Foster is about to announce his retirement although to my knowledge there's been no announcement from the player or the club to that effect. So unless any of these people decide to go of their own volition they will be around next season. I have to say I rather agree with the poster who says that Foster hasn't been the same since the offer from Hants. Perhaps he has now decided to go and he's finding it hard to remain motivated? That can happen to people who know they are leaving a job in any walk of life. But that's all speculation based on a rumour posted on this site.

Thanks for the update - I suspect then both might well retire after 2016 then...
'twas I who said that about Foster !!!

An inept display again that has prompted me to write a letter to the Essex Chronicle, a paper read by the Essex management, I believe. If more letters about the current state of Essex cricket were to appear it might begin to create a climate of opinion that the new chair of the cricket committee might notice. I think it's worth a try, anyway. If you want to write then the email address for letters is newsdesk@essexchronicle.co.uk - you have to keep letters to under 250 words and include your name and address.
-
the chronicle will not say anything critical. they are in the clubs pocket and hardly dedicated to essex cricket preffering chelmsford city football to dominate the backpages despite no one caring.
-
foster is retiring to take up the cricket masters role at a local public school its apparently an open secret

Don Topley better watch out for his job...another public school ex-pro master, just what we need! Can't he go into the state sector - that's where we need the interest.

Very good point Andy. My son who is 13 switched clubs over the winter. At the club he used to play for around half the lads were privately educated and clearly had received a lot of coaching at primary school age. He received none at school.
My son, who is keen on playing the game, now goes to one of the Southend grammar schools where the game is played but many of his new club team mates (he switched clubs to play with his best friend at school) don't really play at all at school. His new club is more working class with no privately educated players As said above ex Essex pros going to local private schools is a well trod path - Lever, Turner, Hardie, R East and Gallian spring to mind - but wouldn't it make sense for the ECB to employ some ex (or current pros in the winter) to coach in state schools/clubs?You never know they might unearth another Ian Botham. Everyone moans about the lack of cricket in state schools but that's a practical step that could be taken to address the issue.
-
Slogger, stop talking complete sense... ;)
Best of luck for Slogger Jnr.

Toddays the night the teddy bears had there picnic .

Now just let me get my head around this, Foster is allegedly going to retire and we let Adam Wheater and Ben Foakes both move on in the last two years or so ???
If the Foster thing is correct should we not try to get Foakes back as he is hardly playing and when he has been then not behind the stumps? Or have we got yet another gem of a wicketkeeper up our sleeves ?
Oh dear our club has been so mismanaged over the past few years, loosing spinners and wicketkeepers for fun :(
-
I suspect Foakes would be the answer but I doubt we could afford/would want to afford his wages. No doubt Surrey are paying him a lot more than we ever did.
I recollect a similar situation with Nadeem Shahid who left Essex to be part of the Surrey squad. I was told they were paying him far more to act as cover for their regulars than Essex paid him. A shame really as I always thought he was good and with Knight and Stephenson leaving around that time he could have been a first team regular for a decade.
-
Wouldnt want Foakes back even IF we could afford his wages! He ran away like a mercenary PURELY for money, not cricketing reasons as it was obvious he wasn't going to play much at Surry for a few seasons, at least. No, let him stagnate in their second team and live to regret his money grabbing ways when his career fades away.
-
A mercenary for moving 'jobs' in a short career to earn more money....reality I'm afraid
-

Not saying he didn't do anything that several other players wouldn't do either, just that I wouldn't like to see him back at Essex 'cos he clearly has no loyalty to the club that "made him" or interest in actually playing and improving his game as a cricketer and would clear off again like a flash, if more money came up on offer!
-
Perhaps at the time, with no chance of Foster moving aside, he thought there were no prospects for him at Essex.
To get a three contract (do Essex ever offer more than two years?) and double his wages - he would have been a fool not to move.
At least he didn't have a hissy fit and buy himself out of a contract a year early like that little upstart Wheater.
-
Last night was shambolic in all ways with poor, wayward bowling (Tait & sadly Napes), dreadful fielding (Fossie who had a stinker especially that dropped catch, Tendo's dropped catch),batsmen who yet again got themselves out when going well (Ryder as so often is the case,Westley with a misjudged shot,Tendo admittedly when having to force the pace),Ravi out to a good ball.
The body language said it all & Tendo showed his disappointment only too clearly with his, basically we lacked direction, purpose & will to win, we let Warwicks get too far away in the last 5 overs having kept it within reach until then, we also lacked a big innings from someone, as always a few got starts but didn't go on.
This has to be the end for some in 1 day cricket, we have to have a big clearout, freshen up the staff, actually make some decent signings (that's if anyone worth their salt would want to join us!!).
I would now settle for us having a year or 2 rebuilding properly with Ravi as Captain (assuming Fossie is retiring) & Tom Westley as VC (His contract ends in 2016 & he is the kind of player we must keep along with Topley, Browne & Porter).
All in all last night was a total embarrassment & unless we qualify for RL 1/4 Finals which we should do then it's season over!!
-

Nobody said that the match was lost when Ravi Yorked himself, they said that it was over. Do try to get your facts right. Jeetan Patel an excellent spinner?? Do me a favour.
As for Ravi being captain, I'm glad that you woke up that's only been said in here around a thousand times.

I thought this year; was our year and 'we're gonna win it.....'!...? ::), or some similar slack jawed drivel.
I've just returned to the UK early this morning, and am suffering somewhat from jet-lag, unable to sleep I've had time to read all the match reports and interesting comments here, and even the lacklustre one of the Clubs' own mouthpiece - who seem unable to console themselves with any positives! However, even to me it is clear that with annual rapidity, No Change Essex have been out-thought, out manoeuvred by a clued-up team who had/have the adaptability and flexibility to change their game plan depending on the situation. Compare and contrast with ECCC, who decide their tactics for the whole tournament before the season has begun!
The Club's obsession with T20 and utter desperation to win the competition, indicates a willingness to risk a player (Napier) for the key all-rounder role when he was clearly unfit. Also, interested to see that RtD, Ryder, Masters all made miraculous recoveries in time for the QF - after being 'unfit' for the weekend CC match.....
One fact you may wish to consider, in the history of T20 - this is the thirteenth season, No Change Essex have won one knockout match away from home in the competition.
Of course the way ahead under the clueless clown duo of Irani, Grayson and the obsolete Essex way will predicate more of the same for season's to come. No real interest in Championship cricket, more import of bits and pieces players to bolster the Clubs' actual priority.
-

How many of us have turned down moves because of loyalty to our current employer? Not many I'd say.
A decade or so ago I would be very angry at mercenary behaviour. However, we know the shambles the club has been in - a litany of off field disasters, whether Law vs Irani or Kaneria/Westfield.
Whilst I think bigger clubs are clearly spending money on squad players they can't afford or should produce themselves, ECCC have thought they could run the same reward policy they did in the 1970s. Unsurprisingly it no longer works.
Also, what makes you think these guys were keen to leave? If your face doesn't fit at the club you'll be no better off staying than at least making some decent cash for a club that might actually win something.
